Help Dugpa Name that Tune Contest

While I am anxiously awaiting Amazon to ship my CD of Fox Bat Strategy, I've been thinking a lot about music in general. For about 16 years or so, I've had a tune stuck in my head that I had heard in a night club in Los Angeles. Over the years I've tried to figure out who the artist was for this song and where I could find it. I tried contacting DJs of the night club with no luck, humming the song to friends of mine, and even checking out some of those online song recognition websites. No luck at all. Just imagine having a ong stuck in your head for 16 years... the pain.. oh the pain... The song is what I would call an ethereal song that is reminiscent of stuff you'd hear from This Mortal Coil or even Cocteau Twins. It was likely published before 1998 but to be honest, the exact date I'm pretty fuzzy on. The song most likely had a female singer. Last night, I did a rendition of the song from memory via a midi file. It's a poor attempt but I'm hoping that someone may be able to help me identify this song.

So here is the challenge. Listen to the song clip I created by clicking here. If you can identify this song and I can verify the song you identified matches the song I've been desperately searching for, you will receive an item from my personal Twin Peaks/David Lynch collection. Please forward the clip to any music buffs that you think can help ID this song. You can send your submissions to webmaster@dugpa.com. Thanks in advance!

Rare YouTube Clip of Neff and Lynch's No Stars

Back in 2001 I had a chance to see Rebekah Del Rio perform at the Gig in Hollywood. One of the songs they performed was a song which was written by John Neff and David Lynch called "No Stars". A full length album was in talks but never materialized. Whether the studio version ever sees the light of day remains to be seen. In any case, check it out on YouTube before it gets pulled.

Add "No Stars" to the list of treasures being stored in the Lynch Vault next to the FWWM Deleted Scenes, "And Still" and the Thought Gang Full Length CD. Thanks to Bill Zuehl for the heads up.

New David Lynch Album - Fox Bat Strategy - Available June 30th - Updated

According to this article, Lynch will be releasing a new album entitled "Fox Bat Strategy" which he recorded with Dave Jaurequi. The album is a tribute to Jaurequi who died in 2006. For those of you who remember, Jaurequi is the guitarist who played on the "Pink Room" and Blue Frank" tracks from the Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me album.

Here is Amazon.com's description of the new CD:

A long-time pet project of film director David Lynch (Blue Velvet, Twin Peaks, Mulholland Drive), Fox Bat Strategy features a cast of musicians who began collaborating with Lynch surrounding the filming of Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me. The same line-up of players appeared on Fire Walk With Me's two roadhouse cuts: "The Pink Room" and "Blue Frank" (as well as made cameos in the film itself). In 1994, these same musicians, with an invitation from Lynch, re-entered the studio for experimental collaboration. What emerged were these 6 tracks. For nearly fifteen years these songs have remained unreleased and unheard, slow-cooking in the ether of time, all the while retaining a uniquely modern sensibility. This release is a tribute to the album's late singer and guitarist Dave Jaurequi, who passed away suddenly in 2006.

Kyle MacLachlan Twin Peaks Webisodes Rumor

Today my email was flooded with links to an article that seems to have originated at the IMDB regarding Kyle MacLachlan and his desire to reprise his role as Agent Dale Cooper in a series of 5 minute Webisodes. I am extremely skeptical of anything that originates on the IMDB but I figured I would post a small note either way. Would have been great though. Check out the original article at IMDB or Contact Music which seems to have picked up the news article. You would think that if there was any truth to the matter, it would be posted somewhere on Kyle's Official Website. Discuss this article over at the Discussion Board.

Listen to the Entire Album to Dark Night of the Soul at NPR

You can preview all the tracks to Dark Night of the Soul by going to NPR.org. In addition, I have been given an official press statement:

A spokesperson for Danger Mouse says:

"Danger Mouse’s new project Dark Night Of The Soul consists of an album length piece of music by Danger Mouse, Sparklehorse and a host of guest vocalists, along with a collection of original David Lynch photography inspired by and based on the music.

The photographs, which provide a visual narrative for the music, are compiled in a limited edition, hand numbered 100+ page book which will now come with a blank, recordable CD-R. All copies will be clearly labeled: ‘For Legal Reasons, enclosed CD-R contains no music. Use it as you will.’

Due to an ongoing dispute with EMI, Danger Mouse is unable to release the recorded music for Dark Night Of The Soul without fear of being sued by EMI.

Danger Mouse remains hugely proud of Dark Night Of The Soul and hopes that people lucky enough to hear the music, by whatever means, are as excited by it as he is."

Dark Night of the Soul CD-R & Legal Entanglement

In a very interesting move, the Official Dark Night of the Soul Website has the following statement on their Ordering page:

This limited edition art book contains 100+ pages of original photographs by celebrated film director David Lynch. Only 5000 copies have been printed and each one is hand numbered. The book will also come with a 24" X 36" poster as well as a custom designed CD-R (poster comes folded). Please note: Due to an ongoing dispute with EMI, Danger Mouse is unable to include music on the CD without fear of legal entanglement. Therefore, he has included a blank CD-R as an artifact to use however you see fit.

Gee, I wonder what people will be using that CD-R for. You go Danger Mouse! In either case, I can't wait to check out the book, the Exhibit, and to listen to the tunes which I'm sure will materialize one way or another. Discuss this article over at the Dugpa.com Discussion Board.

Dark Night of the Soul Lynch Exhibit Press Release

Los Angeles, CA (May 4, 2009)–Iconoclastic filmmaker David Lynch and music visionary Danger Mouse (aka Brian Burton) are collaborating on their first ever project and installation, Dark Night of the Soul, on view at the Michael Kohn Gallery from May 30 through July 11, 2009.

For their premiere collaboration, David Lynch and Danger Mouse have designed a two-room installation at Michael Kohn Gallery capitalizing on the interplay between the music from Danger Mouse’s and Sparklehorse’s album Dark Night of the Soul and the artwork David Lynch created for the album, allowing the mediums of art and music to complement one another. Fifty of Lynch’s photographs are mounted on aluminum panels that seem to float on the gallery walls, reinforcing the moody rhythms of the music from Dark Night of the Soul that will play throughout the gallery. The installation encourages a fully enveloping experience that surpasses the individual visual or auditory elements.

Dark Night of the Soul began when Danger Mouse, who has been a fan of Lynch’s for many years, approached the filmmaker about a possible project. The artists worked together and were inspired by each other— Lynch making photographs influenced by the original songs that Danger Mouse and Sparklehorse were creating. The result is Dark Night of the Soul, Danger Mouse’s first-ever gallery installation, and David Lynch’s first exhibition at Michael Kohn Gallery in nearly 15 years. (The first was in 1995, titled One through Ten, and featured photographs and drawings by the artist.) Lynch’s most recent installation, Diamonds, Gold and Dreams, was on view in the Cartier Dome at Art Basel Miami Beach in December 2008.

Dark Night of the Soul is also the title of a full-length album and illustrated book ($50, published by powerHouse) combining the talents of Danger Mouse, David Lynch and celebrated rock recluse Sparklehorse. In addition to the 100+ page book of David Lynch’s original photographs, the album features artists such artists as the Flaming Lips, Iggy Pop, Frank Black, James Mercer (The Shins), Julian Casablancas (The Strokes) and Suzanne Vega, among many others. For more information on works by David Lynch, please contact Michael Kohn Gallery. For more information on Dark Night of the Soul and the illustrated book, visit www.dnots.com.
