Re: The Random Twin Peaks Thread

I've heard its good.Need to watch it I've been watching Sharp Objects. Sadly, for me, it feels very basic. Well-made and performed, even elegant, but very little to distinguish it from the current model of Prestige TV. I felt this way - that so-called Prestige TV has plateaued and is in a static st...

Re: An Ever-Growing Collection of Quotes Pertaining to the Possibility of a Season 4

I'd say that there are two ways we could take it: 1. Someday we'll live in a world were something like an actor in a weird auteur show winning an Emmy can happen. Yes, that's what he meant, I feel. Yes but if he meant it that general why the #twinpeaks Yep, that #twinpeaks is the thing that actuall...

Re: Emmy Nominations thread

Fair enough. I admittedly have a bit of a bee... It’s certainly a pity that this particular season of GoT beat the final season of The Americans. I’m glad Matthew Rhys won beat actor, but Keri Russell was robbed. I didn’t watch the ceremony, but am I correct in assuming that no one from the TP cast...

Re: Emmy Nominations thread

That doesn’t mean they have the superpower to change the hearts and minds of Emmy voters whose mission statement has traditionally seemed to be honoring the most pedestrian, populist choices. I haven’t seen the Versace series, so I can’t pass judgment, but it sounds like pure melodrama, and it seem...

Re: Emmy Nominations thread

The Emmys are tonight, and I believe that Director and Writer awards will be handed out live. I'm curious if both Lynch and Frost will be there. I would love to see them win just to see a speech. I'd also love to see Lynch win because he deserves it. I'm just hoping for a miracle because I don't bel...

Re: Emmy Nominations thread

I love Black Mirror, but the “U.S.S. Callister” episode doesn’t exist in the same universe as TP P8. From a technical standpoint, the former is a lovingly executed tribute to a 50-year-old series; the latter is the only thing of its kind in the cultural landscape. This is a pretty clear demonstrati...

Re: Season 4? Or is it over after this?

I love The Return, but I'm so hesitant about all this. I can't deny I would be open to, and excited for, a potential season 4. But I can't help thinking that a further continuation could leave all the really poignant themes of finality and loss in season 3 a little less potent. In my opinion the st...

Re: Emmy Nominations thread

The show didn't win anything at the creative arts Emmys, not even hairstyling for Mr. C's glorious locks. I doubt they'll win the writing award, but I feel Lynch has a strong possibility to get the directing award, less because the voters watched or liked the show than as a career award. Ryan Murph...

Re: One year later - how are we feeling?

I wouldn't call it "faking it" when digital cinematography is processed to give it a certain look. What David Fincher does with digital isn't faking it, at least not in any sense where every aspect of filmmaking, whether on celluloid or digital, isn't faking it. Just about everything that...

Re: One year later - how are we feeling?

As I've said before, I was at first put off by the cinematography as I wasn't quite sure what I was watching and it did look overly digital, but it grew on me over time and I came to think of the show as the most arresting looking thing on TV. Part of this realization had to do with the stills that ...

Re: One year later - how are we feeling?

I had pontificated that the dreamer was the viewer as the show was airing. There's a lot of evidence of this, and it is certainly one path worth following in a show that suggest multiple levels of reality and intersecting realities and more and more frequently throughout addresses our own "real...

Re: One year later - how are we feeling?

No, I think Lynch is a fine writer... it’s hard. Blue Velvet is wonderful in that respects. But for me when Peaks was working consistantly -really during its first season at its tightest- was when it was breezy, snappy, like a 30, 40s film. And that also led to the strength when Lynch would come in...

Re: One year later - how are we feeling?

I don’t know why some people are so quick to dismiss Lynch’s writing abilities. As others have pointed out, most of his best-regarded works were written by him solo (BV, MD, Eraserhead). Comparing the Episode 8 script to the episode as shot is a fascinating case study: aside from the two big monolo...

Re: The Random Twin Peaks Thread

Just watched Mulholland Drive last night, for the first time since it was released. I had forgotten most of what happens because of the nearly 20 year gap, so when Rebekah Del Rio was suddenly announced I yelled, "What?! What is this?! I'm gettin' fuckin' Roadhoused in Mulholland Drive!" ...
