Re: Ray/Phillip Jeffries storyline

Since you asked. ;) I think the original TP had two major influences on the TV landscape (both delayed by about a decade, showing how ahead of its time the original was). One of the things it did is to inspire creators like David Chase and Matthew Weiner to create compelling, original works — so-ca...

Re: Ray/Phillip Jeffries storyline

It seems to me very blase to suggest that Lynch and Frost were amiss in their writing on s3 or sloppy. Isn't the question as to why certain plot elements are unclear or fuzzy? Yes! This is I wholeheartedly agree with. To assume that Lynch/Frost were lazy or careless is the worst thing one can do. T...

Re: Ray/Phillip Jeffries storyline

I agree that there are a lot of plot holes in this story. But to be honest, I don't think they matter all that much. It pretty much goes with the territory. Almost anytime you create this huge, complex narrative, the plot holes become inevitable. Since 99.9% of the audience either doesn't catch the...

Re: Twin Peaks Return: The Profoundly Disappointed Support Group (SPOILERS)

I’m still not quite sure what to think of the “not where it counts” bit, but there’s definitely a lot going on there. First we have avowed pacifist Albert having gunned down a person, a colleague (are tulpas an exception to his philosophy?). I’m not passing judgment on him — it was self-defense — b...

Re: Twin Peaks Return: The Profoundly Disappointed Support Group (SPOILERS)

I don’t necessarily share LateReg’s interpretation of that line, but there has certainly been a lot of metatext to Gordon’s character from the beginning. It seems strange that anyone would debate that. Him being Cooper’s boss mirrors his mentorship of Kyle (and Laura Dern and Chrysta Bell, in the n...

Re: Twin Peaks Return: The Profoundly Disappointed Support Group (SPOILERS)

Where does this idea come from that a line Gordon Cole says has to represent something about Lynch as a filmmaker? He is playing a character in Season 3. What other lines in this are Lynch speaking to the audience through Cole? I can't remember others being cited. If there were other examples of th...

Re: Twin Peaks Return: The Profoundly Disappointed Support Group (SPOILERS)

^^Yes, I'm not saying it's a huge deal, but I almost never spot goofs. The fact that I spotted several in this show confirms for me, maybe not some others, that not enough time and care went into crafting this show on page or on set, and the results are on screen. As for this "not gone soft&qu...

Re: Twin Peaks Return: The Profoundly Disappointed Support Group (SPOILERS)

Few things make me giddier than Lynch/Cole stating the line you keep harping on about ("not where it counts, buddy") Few things make you giddier? That’s pretty strong language, pretty emphatic. So you’ll have no problem at all saying you’d be happy to do the same thing yourself if you wer...

Re: Theories & Speculation (SPOILERS)

Just posted this in the Part 18 thread, but figured I’d cross-post here given the lack of conversation lately. I don’t yet have a theory, but in the hopes of spurring some, here’s something I just noticed and haven’t seen discussed before. So we all know by this point that the dead guy in Carrie Pa...

Re: Twin Peaks Return: The Profoundly Disappointed Support Group (SPOILERS)

As far as goofs, MT rightly notes that such flubs are an indelible part of film history going right back to the beginning of the medium. Whether you view them as fun trivia, charming quirks, or little distractions that detract from your enjoyment, they’re inevitable. I think this production overall...

Re: Twin Peaks Return: The Profoundly Disappointed Support Group (SPOILERS)

"only those blinded by their obsessive devotion to David Lynch could ever like this turd", Just the latest of many misrepresentations or exaggerations of what I've actually said. I'm pretty much expecting it by now, so no biggie. On the other hand, going on the attack robs your arguments ...

Re: Twin Peaks Return: The Profoundly Disappointed Support Group (SPOILERS)

In fact we may have stumbled across a way of measuring precisely how much the cult of Lynch has blinded TR’s fanbase. Think again about the shovel-painting, floor sweeping, chevrons above the slot machines, the striptease in front of the writer-director, the Monica Belushi dream, “Not where it coun...

Re: Twin Peaks Return: The Profoundly Disappointed Support Group (SPOILERS)

My reaction to part 16 is that it felt too easy and fake. I knew Lynch had subvert it some way in the finale. The 'Richard' version of Cooper is what felt the most realistic to me, an integration of the Cooper's and of someone who's had a rough 25 years. My reaction was pure unadulterated joy. And ...

Re: Twin Peaks Return: The Profoundly Disappointed Support Group (SPOILERS)

I originally added the following as an ETA after bowisneski seemed to share my same unpopular opinion in the post above mine, but the conversation has already moved forward, so new post it is^^; I see that Cooper as Cooper hyperperforming what he perceives as himself. He's the one who desperately w...
