Re: Scene 35

The credits to INLAND EMPIRE are a source of frustration when it comes to identifying Majch's characters. Lynch chose to give only one credited character to each main actor (with the exceptions of Dern and Theroux), even though they (including Dern) clearly play anywhere between two and four charact...

Re: Scene 35

doesn't that indicate that he is not necessarily Crimp Yes. We don't know that the neighbor with the bulb in his mouth is necessarily Crimp. I think most of have deduced that he is Crimp, and most of us feel in our gut that he is Crimp, but we really do not know that he is Crimp. If you really diss...

Re: L.B.

Unfortunately I have no "evidence" for you beyond the twin facts that A) I simply recognize the man, and B) either Dern or Lynch mention his inclusion in the scene during an interview. Infortunately, I no longer have any memory of which interview this was or how I came across it. If you ma...

Re: Geography of Smithy's house

Correct. The hallway beyond the portal door is traversed by Susan (twice), Smithy, Crimp/Phantom, and Lost Girl. It is a bridge between Smithy's house and outer realms of the Empire.

Re: L.B.

The pianist is indeed Dern's husband, but the "L.B." on Dern's hand is not even likely to be a tattoo. In fact, it seems obvious enough (especially if you follow the plot carefully) that it is a hand-stamp she received at the club she begged her way into before speaking with Mr. K.

Re: Scene 35

Wouldn't you say that the man with the lightbulb, whom most people identify as Crimp because of the monolog, is real when she encounters him next door? If not, why not? Absolutely not - if you watch the scene closely, you'll see that he diappears into thin air. Like a ghost or a phantom. would it b...

Re: Geography of Smithy's house

It seems to me that sometimes the door in the hall does not go to a secret room, or even the hallway that Kiddo mentioned, but opens directly in front of the dining table. No, nothing like that ever happens in the film. the sense I have is that she walked through the door, past the dining table, th...

Re: Scene 35

In my opinion, it is safe to say that Ormand was never in Poland. As far as main players go, only Gruszka, Majchrzak, and Lucas's characters are seen. To me, the most puzzling of these is Lucas. He is the only character who seemed to exist as a real, ordinary person in both the Polish story and in N...

Re: Geography of Smithy's house

BTW what do you think about the fact that Sue can't go there?
The "room" you refer to as "Smithy's secret room" is not a room at all - it is a long hallway (we see it several times throughout the film) that leads to impossible places. It is a portal of sorts.

and one thing that bugs me about ormonds character...who is she?
While I don;t pretend to know the answer, I do feel strongly that screwdriver-Ormand is not Doris Side.

Re: Geography of Smithy's house

Great work, gavriloP! I have one question and one suggestion. First, what is the "feeding chair" and when do we see it in the film? And I do have one major suggestion to improve upon your otherwise excellent floorplan: take into account the back of the house as we see it from outside in th...

Re: Scene 35

I agree that LG is viewing most (but not nearly all) of the film from her TV set in room 205 of the cursed Old Hotel. However, I also believe that she is influencing the action on some level. And so is her captor, The Phantom.

Re: My take on INLAND EMPIRE

in the street, Sue does open her eyes and see...in that beautiful starry night scene, she sees herself. Sorry, but those "beautiful stars" you refer to are not stars at all. That's actually just the funky ceiling texture of Smithy's house in the storage room where Susan is standing. We se...

Sorry, carl. But (pun alert) I'm afraid that my "clear as day and common knowledge" comment has been verified.

Let's move on.

Nope. It's clear as day and common knowledge.

She says "I'm afraid."

Sorry.
