Re: FINAL POLL!!!!!!! Your Reaction to The Return as a Complete Work

Re: Above: It's interesting. I find The Return a lot less engaging, visually, the Inland Empire . The Returns ' shots rarely have Empire 's perspective, or depth, or sense of point of view. They're painterly, at their best, but in an orderly way. I guess I even miss the rough edges. But re: the thre...

Re: Gender in Twin Peaks: The Return (SPOILERS)

Personally, I don't care about any demographic's broad portrayal in the vast and influential world of fiction unless it affects me directly.

EDIT -- Beaten by the post above or didn't see it becaus of the page jump; my bad.

Re: Part 18 - What is your name? (SPOILERS)

I'm more inclined to think the Jumping Man is another visual shade of Judy, if those brief visual connections are to be given weight, than to remove all the other satisfying plot and thematic implications that Sarah is Judy.

Right, thanks! That too. I'd included that one in other discussions and couldn't remember it here.

Re: Part 18 - What is your name? (SPOILERS)

Why is everyone so sure that the Sarah is possessed by Judy? All the clues we have received are that Sarah is possessed by the Jumping Man. The Jumping Man might be a different aspect of the grandson, but there has always been another Chalfont besides the grandson. Especially in light of the last s...

Re: You have been Lynched (Spoilers)

I think LH and particularly MD were "deciphered" (insofar as that's possible) pretty quickly; it didn't take years. OTOH, I don't believe there is a common consensus on IE to this day, although I have my interpretation. This is why LH and MD are on the lower end of Lynch's output for me, ...

Re: FINAL POLL!!!!!!! Your Reaction to The Return as a Complete Work

I still have mixed feelings on some of its earlier portions, but the finale was so good upon a day of reflection that I think I love the whole thing. Changed my vote earlier. Every new angle I approach the ending from, I like it even more -- and, concretely now, not just as an ending for The Return ...

Re: S3: Biggest Disappointment About Unresolved Subplots?

I'm mostly happy with the trajectory of the whole season and I don't think Part 1-16 are "unimportant". Our world was unstable and it was critical that Coop and Freddie kill BOB. I just wish we knew more about the Fireman. I felt like if we knew more of his endgame regarding WHY he gave C...

Re: The "We live inside a dream" theory

Okay, so if any portion of this season was to have been a literal dream (and I think it's a viable reading that parts were; sitting there delightfully right alongside all the other readings in a way that doesn't ruin them), it strikes me that it would be Cooper's dream in the Black Lodge. As noted, ...

Re: Richard and Linda, Lynch's Masterstroke (SPOILERS)

"Two birds, one stone" was how Cooper had apparently described his goals to Cole at some point off-screen during the events of the original series. From my reading, the "two birds" are either saving Laura Palmer or solving her mystery, and defeating the enigmatic Judy at the cent...

Re: Freddie, or Why the Wind was Sucked Out of the Sails

I think we actually agree more than anything, especially about Cooper. And the silly pulpiness of 17's climax definitely is an honest representation of his worldview at the time -- incidentally the same one that ensures he'd have to attempt to go even further than its happy ending. Anyway, agreed th...

Re: Freddie, or Why the Wind was Sucked Out of the Sails

I should say: I don't think Lynch intended Freddie or any of the other mythos wholly as a piss-take. I think he genuinely believes in and loves almost all of the purely joyful or absurd elements in The Return, and the entire long story of Freddie and his wonderful, ludicrous backstory screamed Lync...

Re: S3: Biggest Disappointment About Unresolved Subplots?

I think the map was just part of the cartoonish build-up of fantasy and exposition that came to a head in episode 17, before being wiped off the table for the remystification of the supernatural elements as all representing elements of Laura (and Cooper's) journeys. So I'm pretty satisfied with its ...

Re: Part 18 - What is your name? (SPOILERS)

Do you mean this on a meta level as someone watching and experiencing it? On some level, it makes me regret going on the journey at all. I can accept a bleak ending for Cooper and Laura if most of what I watched wasn't just eradicated from existence. There's something very unoriginal and mean-spiri...
