Re: Twin Peaks Return: The Profoundly Disappointed Support Group (SPOILERS)

I really enjoyed Meow (2017) if you're looking for a funny optimistic movie with also some romance and adventure. Thanks for that. I guess my point was that it takes courage for an artist to be humanist these days. It's too freaking easy to do ugly and nihilistic, because there's nothing at stake a...

Re: Twin Peaks Return: The Profoundly Disappointed Support Group (SPOILERS)

I've heard too many DL fans say that what's he did with TR's tone was so terribly brave. In actual fact this post-modern cold detachment and abstract fantasy is really old hat. It's been the conventional 'cool' style since the 60s. It's true that it's very rare for TV - but it's been done to death i...

Re: Twin Peaks Return: The Profoundly Disappointed Support Group (SPOILERS)

Yes - TR absolutely did get celebrated for not being an orange, as if quality isn't required in apples. And yet, had DL produced another Elephant Man - everyone would be falling over themselves about how he had reinvented traditional narrative and produced an orange unlike any other orange...or some...

Re: Twin Peaks Return: The Profoundly Disappointed Support Group (SPOILERS)

"I don't know about Breaking Bad using graphic violence sparingly... That show's one of the bloodiest, goriest mainstream shows I know." You must not have seen many violent shows then. BrBa only ever used explicit violence where it was required for max. dramatic impact. Much of the time it...

Re: Twin Peaks Return: The Profoundly Disappointed Support Group (SPOILERS)

I've always disrespected undisciplined artists and Lynch is a textbook case of that. Vince GIlligan is my TV hero because Breaking Bad was the most disciplined piece of TV I can think of. Despite being on cable and its crime subject matter, it contained zero swearing, female nudity, explicit sex and...

Re: Twin Peaks Return: The Profoundly Disappointed Support Group (SPOILERS)

"Eraserhead had one thing that The Return painfully lacked (imo Inland Empire, too) - artistic self-control." I haven't seen it, but I did read that he cut 20 mins out of it because he had mixed the sound wrong. You know what he'd do now? He'd play the messed up sound to audiences oohing a...

Re: Twin Peaks Return: The Profoundly Disappointed Support Group (SPOILERS)

"However, this was the early 90s. Since then the warmth, depth of feeling and quirkiness of the show has become something of a standard against which TV is measured, and it has spurred TV onwards and upwards. Things have improved; there's no longer a dearth of things to watch like there used to...

Re: Twin Peaks Return: The Profoundly Disappointed Support Group (SPOILERS)

IMO, you have to be really naive to think that Lynch got to his cushy position because of how 'weird' his art is (regardless of the undeniable creative value of certain aspects of it pre-TR) or because he's the most gifted of the unconventional directors+screenwriters. Off the top of my head I can t...

Re: Twin Peaks Return: The Profoundly Disappointed Support Group (SPOILERS)

In regard to Lynch being incredibly lucky - I concur and I've talked about this at length on Welcome to Twin Peaks and it's something his hardcore fans don't seem to put much thought into: The first screening of Eraserhead attracted a whopping crowd of...almost nobody. DL had a 99% chance of becomin...

Re: Twin Peaks Return: The Profoundly Disappointed Support Group (SPOILERS)

"I've actually been on a binge of feel-good material to wash out the terrible taste left by TR. Can you recommend something? :)" Oh yes: The Hidden did wonders for me. It's the extreme opposite of TR: Sci-fi concept dripping with humanism, quientessentially 80s atmosphere and a young...

Re: Twin Peaks Return: The Profoundly Disappointed Support Group (SPOILERS)

"We're left hanging, with the addition of a bad taste in the mouth after all the crap we had to swallow over those 18 hours. Even if it's not a F U to the audience, it's at least cruel and unusual punishment for being lifelong fans." Yep. Although I'm so, so glad that Lynch's willy is doin...

Re: Twin Peaks Return: The Profoundly Disappointed Support Group (SPOILERS)

"There was a lot of potential to be had with the idea of Evil Coop manipulating the characters in Twin Peaks into thinking that he was the Dale they once knew." Kyle came out looking like gold out of the sorry mess that is TR - his work was the only thing keeping me going until ep. 11 beca...

Re: Twin Peaks Return: The Profoundly Disappointed Support Group (SPOILERS)

I struggle tracing the original comment about needing to get Lynch off the stage because he's an old man embarrassing himself and everyone who comes into contact with him, but that was incredibly well-said. TR has made him look like an inmate that's running the TP asylum. Before it seemed like actor...

Re: Twin Peaks Return: The Profoundly Disappointed Support Group (SPOILERS)

If he were to release FWWM and Dune now, I'd bet my life savings on the critical response to them being the same as with The Return - they would be considered the greatest thing since sliced bread. There'd be an ovation instead of booing at Cannes for FWWM.
