Fairly simple answer actually. They made too many. I think they made 40 or 50,000 sets. They made these a bit too late as well (Part way through the second season) More info can be found on this page:

Yes, but did he have a super strong career to begin with? Most people only know him from Slap Shot. I doubt that film hurt him much as that film was a bit of a blip on the radar.
