Re: General Discussion on the New Series (All Opinions Welcome) (SPOILERS)

I'll bet some people called friends and just said "This is the water, and this is the well. Drink full and descend. The horse is the white of the eyes, and dark within."

Re: Twin Peaks Return: The Profoundly Disappointed Support Group (SPOILERS)

He he he. I was thinking similarly. Now it's hard to say anything :-) They didn't speak much in this last part, either, anyway! Now let's see what you guys have written. One thing I can say for sure is - this is the most uncompromising thing ever! I put a small reaction above. I liked this part qui...

Re: General Discussion on the New Series (All Opinions Welcome) (SPOILERS)

I think it's constructive to look at the NIN performance in the larger context of the 18 hour film. Lynch was, I think, very methodically creating a sense of spaciousness in order to rhythmically build up to that explosion sequence. This sequence came on the tail of a very tight span of narrative, ...

Re: ROLLING POLL! Your ongoing reaction to the first half of The Return, parts 1-9 (SPOILERS)

Even though I definitely enjoyed Part 8, I'm not going to say that it's wiping away all the other issues in the series. It was good, but not immaculate. I'm still in the heavily mixed/negative category. This was a vacation and a little history, but the problems with the show will likely return.

Re: Part 8 - Gotta light? (SPOILERS)

I definitely liked this one more than the last few. Horror, and a change of pace, were what the show needed at this point. I've had the "poem" in my head since this morning when I watched it. The digital cinematography kept the B&W from being completely engrossing, but it was smart to ...

Re: Twin Peaks Return: The Profoundly Disappointed Support Group (SPOILERS)

Well okay then. That was the shot in the arm the show needed, although I expect it to go right back to its problems. I knew that after last week and Evil Coop getting loose, it needed horror, and this was it. It wasn't sterling, but the change of pace was necessary.

Re: Twin Peaks Return: The Profoundly Disappointed Support Group (SPOILERS)

His behavior is consistent with someone who had their brain fried/scrambled by spending 25 years in a nether, dream world, then being catapulted into nothingness, before being reborn into the real world by going through and electric socket. Right, that's all good, but the gag has run its course. I'...

Re: General Discussion on the New Series (All Opinions Welcome) (SPOILERS)

No you didn't say you 'believed it was an artistic failure', you said it is likely to be an artistic failure, as if that were the consensus. At this point, the closest we would have to objectivity in the realm of artistic success or failure would be the reactions of the bulk of critics and other ar...

Re: Twin Peaks Return: The Profoundly Disappointed Support Group (SPOILERS)

I've got to say that, even though I've enjoyed many Dougie moments, it's time. If the next hour doesn't either significantly advance the story or have him "wake up," I can't say I have much hope for the long-term health of this show. Having this story extend to the end or near the end of t...

Re: General Discussion on the New Series (All Opinions Welcome) (SPOILERS)

Holy fuck, it's my own opinion that it's likely to be an artistic failure. I didn't say it was anybody else's. Damn, superfans are so defensive when something they cherish is criticized. The thread says "all opinions welcome." I'm saying that even though I believe it's an artistic failure ...

Re: General Discussion on the New Series (All Opinions Welcome) (SPOILERS)

How is this show doing for Showtime financially at this point, if that's known? I'm not sure how premium channels make money except by subscribers, as they don't air regular commercials. I'm hoping that, even if the show turns out to be an artistic failure overall (as is looking likely), it at least...

Re: The Roadhouse scenes performances (SPOILERS)

I sort of like the loose feeling this band-of-the-week technique has given the show, but haven't overly enjoyed the performances or songs themselves. The beat and synth work of the Chromatics (even though no synth was on stage) was good, but the vocalist less so. I liked the synths of the Au Revoir ...

Re: Twin Peaks Return: The Profoundly Disappointed Support Group (SPOILERS)

Regarding the contempt for the original show, I think it's fair to say that Lynch had a bit of contempt for it even during the original run in the episodes he helmed, or at least wasn't shy about doing his own thing. Look at episode 8, which totally changes the rhythms of season 1 and has characters...

Re: Viewer reaction is the same as it was back then

Instead of one central mystery, there are numerous interlocking mysteries (what is Doppelcoop after, who is trying to kill DoppelCoop, what is the thing in the box, where did Laura go, etc?). So the sense of mystery is still there, however the plot is much more complex (and thus much richer) this t...

Re: Which scene was a time waster?

I loved the painting of the shovels and the contraption (which I suspect Lynch built or designed). I hated the Wally scene, but at least it had dialogue. As much as I liked the absurdist nature of the sweeping, placing it near the end of the episode when we wanted more plot before next week was a mi...
