DavidLynch.com - no new members and sad demise

Postby Bob_Dobbs_Blue_Bob » Wed Feb 03, 2010 6:10 am

Hi all,

A few years ago, I remember when I first discovered Davidlynch.com and how exciting it was! I couldn't wait to get cable Internet and a faster computer so I could enjoy it fully. So, I did get those things and signed up as a full member.

At first, I had a lot of fun exploring the site and putting together the clues to the puzzles, finding the hidden videos, etc. The chat room was fun too and I met some great people there.

But, that soon turned to disappointment when the site was never updated with anything new. It's like they gave up on it - a failed experiment. So, I guess it is. I let my membership expire and didn't join again.

Now, I see they are no longer accepting new members on dl.com and I guess I know why.

Feels like I'm writing a kind of obituary for the site and it probably is, in many ways.

I wish the site would be revived, but maybe they never got enough paying members for it to support itself? Does anyone have any info on why the site has withered?

The DL.com site is not even updated with the latest "Lynch" and I come to Dugpa to find out what's new with David. Strange marketing. The "stumble-upon" method? ;)

B.

It's pretty sad really. There is so much potential there from a content and merchandising standpoint. I joined way back when the site first went up. Although there was no message board, the chat was o.k. (until Lynch appeared and everyone offered to wash his feet) there was even a fan hanging out there that is now a famous director. But yes, you can still purchase mugs, buttons, hats and hustler-like nude photos! Oh well.

dl.com is still one of the most interesting sites out there, in terms of design. Any idea what was spent to make the site?

One person who is making a real go of Internet broadcasting is Tom Green. I think he's a real inspiration to independent producers, with his membership-based site and the ability to stream live shows, as well as archives. His site is the best example I've yet seen of being able to distribute one's own content online with one's own site.

I'm really disappointed to hear the site is dying. I was really keen on joining once I had the finances. We can only hope it will be revitalised somehow.

It's a site I'd have like to have joined, but didn't have the money when it started out. Didn't Lynch say that he had pretty much abandoned it in favour of his transcendental meditation foundation?

That's sad to hear, sort of. It was well worth the monthly fee, but only for one or two months(that is in its latter years with no new updates). Over time the content actually lessened, the Dumbland episodes became broken with the audio all off, and the greatest part of all the show Rabbits was taken off completely with the announcement of Inland Empire. It was truly a lynchian website though, searching around without a clue, and sometimes with a clue, and thinking you've seen all that is on the site to find a whole new video buried somewhere. Frustrating though, it seems like it would be a simple thing for example to add a high quality gallery of his paintings and photography, but instead just a few low-res bits. At first I thought maybe the Jennifer Lynch radio show was just some more content to throw up there, but it was honestly as great as everything else on there. The literally hundreds of interview question videos were great too, especially before any sort of similar things had been released on his dvds.

There was a lot of content on there that probably won't be appearing anywhere else. That dvd best of dl.com is only a few things. I would love to rewatch something such the trip to Cannes diary videos, but even when I was a member I could rarely get it to work.

I still check out the member wmmvrrvrrmm's site for his artwork sometimes. http://web.me.com/wmmvrrvrrmm/The_Wmmvrrvrrmm_Place/16/Pages/Lost_%26_Sold_Works.html#2

It's funny, because it seems like a lot of sites are slowly dying... I wonder why?

Subscription sites were popular for a while, but people seemed to have lost interest in paying for their services when social networking sites came into prominence.

And in the case of davidlynch.com, it seems like once DL got busy with the David Lynch Foundation and Inland Empire, he didn't have much time for or interest in updating his site. I was never a member, and one of the reasons I never joined is that by the time I found out about it, the amount of new content being put up had already slowed down considerably.

Blogs and social networking sites have changed the way people use the Internet. There's no point spending thousands of pounds on an official site if you can communicate faster and more directly with people via Facebook, Twitter etc. Sites like davidlynch.com are nice in theory but the experience varies massively, depending on your hardware, software and Internet provider. Expensive marketing sites rarely contain any actual content, unless you count wallpaper and short, streaming interview clips, which I don't. Even message boards are starting to look antiquated now that technology is becoming more user-friendly and people with no HTML skills can create a blog and dispense with moderators, trolls and bug-infested software updates.

Anyone know what's going on with davidlynch.com? It's said "coming soon" for the last couple of days (the store and everything else is gone/inaccessible).

Not sure (maybe a relaunch with new/different content), but if you want to see something very odd, go to the site but don't type in www. at the beginning of the URL.
