I just started reading John Thorne's book, "The Essential Wrapped in Plastic". In the chapter on Season One, some of the actors describe the casting/auditioning process (similar descriptions can be found in other works on Lynch, of course). Lynch seems to (never?) have anyone read for a part, but rather just talks to the actors to see if they feel right for whatever he has in mind.

So I'm wondering if there are other directors with a similar approach to casting/auditioning actors and would be interested to hear some stories

I became familiar with his style of auditioning when reading Catching The Big Fish a while ago, and it genuinely occurred to me (and still does) why it isn't a much more widely used method. Perhaps it is? It just seems to make so much sense to see someone in their relaxed and natural state, and match that up to a certain character so you know for a fact that they will fill the shoes well, and add certain flourishes to it.

It's genius in its simplicity.
