Beatles' Indian guru Maharishi Yogi dies

AMSTERDAM (Reuters) - The guru to the Beatles who introduced transcendental meditation to the West, Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, died at his Dutch home overnight, aides said on Wednesday. He was said to be 91.
The reclusive Indian mystic shot to international prominence when the Beatles -- John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr -- visited him in the foothills of the Himalayas in 1968 to learn his transcendental meditation techniques.
Film footage of the four Beatles sitting cross-legged and dressed in white robes with garlands of flowers was beamed round the world. Beach Boy Mike Love, singer Donovan and U.S. actress Mia Farrow joined the sessions.
After teaching other 1960s and 70s icons, the Maharishi with the flowing hair and white beard gained a worldwide following and had more than five million people studying his methods.
"His Holiness Maharishi Mahesh Yogi... passed away peacefully," his Global Country of World Peace movement said in a statement.
"Maharishi's work is complete. He has done what he set out to do in 1957 -- to lay the foundation for a peaceful world. Now, Maharishi is being welcomed with open arms into heaven," said the statement.
The Maharishi moved his headquarters to the small southern Dutch village of Vlodrop in 1990.
WORLD PEACE
He periodically emerged to appeal for funds to promote world peace, building a huge business empire ranging from real estate dealing to a company selling ayurvedic medicine and cosmetics.
The Maharishi set up universities and schools all over the world and his Natural Law Party -- which promotes yogic flying, a practice that involves sitting in the lotus position and bouncing into the air -- has campaigned in dozens of countries.
Transcendental meditation, known as TM by its followers, involves reciting a mantra that practitioners say helps the mind stay calm even under pressure. It gradually gained medical respect over the decades as the Maharishi challenged Western scientists to investigate its health benefits.
Film director David Lynch, a TM practitioner, said: "It has changed my life, my world. I am not alone. Millions of other people of all ages, religions and walks of life practise the technique and enjoy incredible benefits."
Last month the Maharishi stepped down as head of his organisation and said he would be "retiring into silence".
Born in central India, the Maharishi rarely spoke about his early life, saying the past held little interest for him.
He first visited the United States in 1959 as part of a global tour to introduce transcendental meditation to the world, and from 1961 he began to train teachers.
According to the TM organisation, the Maharishi's message remained constant: "Life is bliss. Man is born to enjoy. Within everyone is an unlimited reservoir of energy, intelligence, and happiness."

Les Beatles - John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison et Ringo Starr - lui avaient rendu visite en Inde en 1968, lui procurant une renommée internationale.
Des images montrant les quatre musiciens assis en tailleur et vêtus de tuniques blanches, le cou ceint de couronnes de fleurs, avaient été diffusées dans le monde entier. Le "Beach Boy" Mike Love, le chanteur britannique Donovan et l'actrice américaine Mia Farrow avaient participé à ses cours.
Après avoir enseigné la méditation à plusieurs figures marquantes des années 1960 et 1970, le gourou indien avait convaincu de nombreux disciples, et six millions de personnes ont suivi son enseignement de par le monde.
"Sa Sainteté Maharishi Mahesh Yogi (...) est décédée en paix", a indiqué son mouvement, le Pays global de la paix mondiale, dans un communiqué.
"Le travail de Maharishi est achevé. Il a fait ce qu'il voulait faire en 1957 - jeter les bases d'un monde en paix. A présent, Maharishi est accueilli à bras ouverts au paradis."
Le gourou, reconnaissable notamment à sa longue barbe blanche, avait déménagé en 1990 son QG dans le petit village de Vlodrop, aux Pays-Bas.
DAVID LYNCH, UN ADEPTE
Il se montrait de temps à autre pour lancer des appels aux dons pour promouvoir la paix dans le monde, tout en bâtissant un empire regroupant notamment des intérêts dans l'immobilier et une entreprise vendant des traitements et des cosmétiques ayurvédiques.
Le Maharishi avait créé des universités et des écoles dans le monde entier et son Parti de la loi naturelle - qui promeut la lévitation, ou vol yogique, consistant à faire des petits bonds en position du lotus - a fait campagne dans des dizaines de pays.
La méditation transcendantale - MT pour ses adeptes - consiste à réciter un mantra qui, selon eux, permet à leur esprit de garder son calme même sous la pression. Progressivement, elle a fini par bénéficier d'une certaine reconnaissance médicale.
Le réalisateur David Lynch, un adepte de la MT, a déclaré: "Cela a changé ma vie. Je ne suis pas le seul. Des millions d'autres personnes de tous âges, religions et milieux sociaux pratiquent cette technique et en tirent d'incroyables bienfaits."
Le mois dernier, le Maharishi a démissionné de la présidence de l'organisation en annonçant qu'il allait se "retirer dans le silence".
Né dans le centre de l'Inde, le Maharishi disait avoir peu d'intérêt pour le passé, et de fait il parlait rarement du sien.
Il s'est rendu pour la première fois aux Etats-Unis en 1959 dans le cadre d'une tournée internationale qui visait à faire connaître la méditation transcendantale, et à partir de 1961 il a commencé à former des enseignants.
Selon le site internet de l'organisation, qui cite une phrase du Maharishi, "la méditation transcendantale permet à l'esprit conscient de s'ouvrir au 'réservoir' infini d'énergie, de créativité et d'intelligence qui réside en chacun de nous".

I truly am sorry for all of his followers. Guess we should light some incense...
