Lynch/Badalamenti style music

Postby oscar gonzo » Sat Jan 28, 2012 9:38 am

Hi again!
I'm putting together a second Lynch Café night at a local and very Lynchian bar here in Ghent, Belgium. This basicly means hang up some red curtains, lower the lights and dj lynch soundtracks mixed with music that has the same sort of vibe.
I'm gathering music now and am as always interested in new ideas

Do any of you have suggestions?
So far i have, to name but a few, selected albums by
Bohren und der club of gore (doesn't come closer to badalamenti style doom jazz than this!)
Stars of the Lid
Labradford
Talvihorros
Dale Cooper and the Dictaphones
Barry Adamson
Miles Davis
Slowdive

and this rather surpring find, an album by none other than Jack Kovorkian, aka Doctor Death, who apparantly made a moody, slow jazz album that reminds me a bit of the Twin peaks fire walk with me soundtrack, check it out:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cg2S1mLrzEw

feel free to add some more names to the list, and thanks!

Hello. I enjoyed your suggestions. I am familiar with most of the bands you´ve mentioned, but i really enjoyed slowdive. never heard of it before.
Nevertheless, here are some more suggestions:

Combustible edison - Nice jazz band with some very nice noir tracks.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8RDae4ZZB7A

Barry adamson - The earliest albums are a thrill to hear:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kTM1aJGVw6U

The lounge lizards - Obscure jazz band, but very fun to hear
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qIgLcQa5iRc

As for soundtracks, i recomend the following:
Leisure suit larry 7 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ybOq4DmtWRo
Sam and max hit the road - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SOLjrZCGPrg
Mysterious skin (highly recomended) - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sM0oqqyX8Jo
Romeo is bleeding - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JitgmYYKjMI
La noire - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a50ZFGdZGqY
Roger rabbit - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UIfWLQzYuJM

So far, i can only remember these ones.

Most of which i was about to suggest have already been said, but these might help you out:

Ghastly City Sleep: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ftet3aIFDds
(Their EP is like Julee Cruise joined Explosions In the Sky. Gorgeous.)

Eluvium: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nkD6O0K-kdg
and: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w0rjIo4awu0
(I couldn't pick one, so here is "Indoor Swimming At The Space Station" and "Reciting The Airships. Beautiful piano and synth that certainly brings similar emotions/feelings to Badalamenti, for me at least.)

Killimanjaro Darkjazz Ensemble: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YnRLdTOR0G8
(As they name suggests, you may well dig this as a fan of Borhen... its very FWWM, and has female vocals littered throughout.)

I'll post more if i remember any, i'm pretty tired right now! This night sounds awesome, you'll have to upload the tracklist when you've done it and post pics/vids!

Nurse With Wound's Huffin Rag Blues has a warped easy listening feel that's similar to the style Lynch & Badalamenti sometimes use, and there's also their tribute called Glory Hole to David Lynch which uses a lot of Eraserhead samples (although it might be hard to find now).

Here are a few samples from Huffin Rag Blues:
Thrill Of Romance: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uf3z_h2BVzU

Groove Grease: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RiTx_kZOZXU

Bruce Gilbert's Oblivio Agitatum isn't a million miles away from Lynch's Air Is On Fire stuff (and it's currently only £2.07 to download the album from Amazon UK which is a bit of a bargain).

These are great suggestions, thanks, and keep 'em coming :D
@Auggeo: if you like slowdive, get their album Pygmalion, it's a classic, and sometimes reminds me of julee cruise

The Paul Motian Trio with Bill Frisell and Joe Lovano (drums , guitar, tenor saxaphone) has a very free floating feeling to it. Their two 1995 Village Vanguard live albums are very atmospheric in this respect.

Maybe the Lynch Café night has already been taken place but you should listen to the Zodiac o.s.t. by David Shire.

Hi, new member here. (: I'll take this opportunity to recommend the talented Chris Isaak - he has actually collaborated with Mr. Lynch a couple of times (Lynch directed the video for Wicked Game and he subsequently played the role of Special Agent Chester Desmond in TP: FWWM), and there's a reason for that; Isaak has this distinct, dreamy kind of neo-Roy Orbison crooner sound. Lots of bluesey guitars and reverb. Anything off the self titled Chris Isaak album might suit your needs, but here's a couple of examples:

- Lie To Me

- Blue Hotel

Hope that offers something. Once again, perhaps it's already happened but this might offer something to users looking for more music in the same vein.

In addition, some isaak´s songs were extensively used in Blue Velvet and Wild at Heart.

I knew he had a couple songs on the WaH soundtrack, but what songs of his were incorporated into BV? I remember I was surprised at the time that he didn't have a song on the FWWM soundtrack.

Livin for your lover and gone ridin. They are from his debut album (silvertone), from 1985.
Lynch used the instrumental version like he later did for Wild at Heart...

With its low rumble and minimalist synth work, I always felt the same foreboding and mystery of Dark Mood Woods when listening to this Brian Eno track called "The Lost Day", from his Ambient 4 (1982). Two years later, Eno would contribute to Dune's soundtrack.
