Since Doris is dressed the same and looks to be about the same age, I now would say that the cop-shop scene takes place the same night she stabs Sue. Oh sure, I see her as a character in OHIBT, at least.
What stumps me, is why she has the screwdriver stuck in her own side.

Oh, yes, it seems to be what happened right after the stabbing. But she says "I'm gonna kill someone." I don't think there is a natural explanation for that or for how she got stabbed. These thing just seem to be reflections of each other. I mentioned in another thread the scene in Mulholland Dr. where Diane walks toward the couch after making coffee"”and for a moment we see in the same scene her white robe and the green vase of flowers on the table on the other side of the couch. These things are set in two different times (the green vase appears with the piano ashtray), and yet, there they are for us to see. The only natural explanation for me is that someone dreams these things. But I think people get lost when they go looking for a dreamer inside the story. When she stabs Dern she is very upset to see what she has done. It's unlikely that she found an open hardware store after midnight on Hollywood Blvd. and picked up another screwdriver, so that screwdriver plus the time anomaly just mean to me that this is some kind of dream. The meaning seems to be something like in John Donne's meditation: "Every man's death diminishes me for I am a part of mankind. Therefore never send to ask for whom the bell tolls. It tolls for thee."

applesnoranges wrote:Yeah, great one. It seems to fit for me somewhere toward the beginning as Nikki knows she is playing in a movie with Billy and has heard the story of the curse and the old folk tale, but has not yet become lost in the role of Sue.
It seems that Nikki also generates her face expression from a "what-to-do-and-what-not-to-do"-pattern. She really gets more serious and serious, especially when "Kinski" says that he said: "I want you." Interestingly "Kinski" talks about reactions from I think Pete and another one, but somehow she is so impressed by what she experienced that she doesn`t fully recognize the reaction of Nikki while talking to her.

Yes, she seems convinced that her friend will be there on her side but seems not to know about the things going on with the Dern character so she never thinks to notice. It seems to be a fragment of an idea for a movie which originally involved Kinski much more. I remember reading about IE when it was first begun and Kinski was always mentioned as one of the stars. It seems then that eventually that idea changed. The two characters are made to seem similar so it is tempting to imagine that they would have been reflections of each other. Or, Kinski as a sort of midway point between Dern and Gruszka. Anyway, that's all there is unless we get a MMTTH someday.
