Out of pocket, David Lynch and Jean-Luc Godard are the only two whose work I enjoy so consistently, even when I don't, that I'm committed to exploring their entire filmographies.

But other also-rans to bring it to five (most of whom have been mentioned here):

Eric Rohmer
Paul Thomas Anderson
Sofia Coppola (though I wish she would do something I find as clever and affecting as Lost In Translation again; her catalog is filled with moody, atmospheric pieces that unfortunately don't build up to much; I feel like I'm always rooting for her)

Also for certain films the Cohen Brothers as a dual writer-director unit, Kubrick, Tarantino (who I increasingly feel bad about due to the kinds of audiences he attracts, but Inglourious Basterds remains one of my favorite theater experiences of all time and nothing can change that), Polanski almost for Rosemary's Baby alone, and I'm not really sure what to do with Ishiro Honda, who I think is more of an excellent draftsman than an auteur, but the original Godzilla and Mothra vs. Godzilla remain two of my favorite movies largely due to his contributions.

Extremely difficult to pick only five. Every time I whittle the list down I recall others that deserve to be on it every bit as much as the others. Selecting which five then becomes more random than rational, with names I can remember getting in and names I can't recall immediately being excluded.

To the person who brought up Polanski's "The Tenant" on DVD: The initial DVD if I recall is edited or shall I say altered. For anyone who is interested in seeing The Tenant in its true form, look for the VHS.

It's been years since I've seen the film (and years since I bought the dvd). I don't know if any other dvd's have been issued. BUT I remember when I got the dvd there was one scene in particular (the party scene) where people were dubbed and sounded like Minnie Mouse. I'm sure there are other scenes that were messed with. I sold my DVD right after that. I was peeved.

If there is an updated DVD I'm not aware of (I hope so).. let me know.

Just a piece of trivia: But I was watching the commentary for A Nightmare on Elm Street. The scene where Tina is standing at her bedroom window (during her nightmare) and Freddy throws something at the window. It's a tooth. It's a homage to The Tenant when Polanski finds a tooth in the wall. Just thought I'd mention that here.

I'd never say these were The 5 Greatest Directors, but here is a brutal cut of 5 I consider to be great, and who I have a particular fondness for, in no particular order:

Oh, and Stanley Kubrick, of course. One of the all-time greats.
