But when hasn't Lynch showcased musicians he liked in his work? Including Julee Cruise, Marilyn Manson, Rebekah del Rio, Roy Orbison, Chris Isaak, etc.

If you're going to say it's different because these people are contemporary to 2017 and you don't feel their music fits into your conception of Twin Peaks then just say that. That's a valid take which I disagree with. But that take doesn't mean that he's perving on Au Revoir Simone... or Trent Reznor... or Hudson Mohawke... or the Cactus Blossoms... or his son...

That song by Au Revoir Simone, which i liked btw, is from 2007, fyi. I know post 2005 years are basically like pre 2005 months, but still, not that contemporary!

So did Fire Walk with Me. Time is a golden circle.
Ironically FWWM divided the community for the the same reasoning. Those that wanted FWWM to be a continuation of the story and those that wanted FWWM to be a continuation of the story but still loved the deepening and the story... given season two was largely moved away from Laura.

Season three seems to have divided the fan base by those that wanted a continuation of the story and were disappointed and those that wanted a continuation of the story but still loved the lynichian aspects of what season three is largely all about.

However... I am a person that loved FWWM but am disappointed with Season three... Therefore the community has been divided four fold... a very sad thing as all the peakies I've ever met have all been just excited about everything that I am with only minor disagreements such as who was the best Donna etc...

She was the original character and so I think she IS Donna.

I absolutely detest Lara Flynn Boyle however as a person... just dreadful.. If it was down to who I liked better as an actor and as a human being then Moira Kelly would win hands down... I loved her in FWWM... the only actress to replace another character so central to a story and be able to pull it off so well.

But the original cast has to prevail... Given how corrupted Twin Peaks is now, its easy to see how Lara could fit in there, given how corrupted her own personal life is...

Twin Peaks The Return also divide the world between those who love it and those who don't. Nothing different from the original series in this. Frost and Lynch dont cater to some limited group of ppl called 'twin peaks fans'. They made a show for ppl to like or dislike, much as the one they made 27 years ago. My wife don't really like it. It's too unconventional for her and that's fine. I love it. People like different things.

Now as for revisiting a work, it seems that both Frost and Lynch are quite clear on a desire to do a work of art/fiction that touches on how time passes and lives change. Mark Frost being the most outspoken about it saying simply that nostalgia had no interest for them going into writing The Return.
We have had lots of nostalgia trips lately - ghostbusters, Gilmore girls, x-files, star wars, mcgyver etc etc and it's all basically the same stuff warmed over and one big bowl of yawn.Twin Peaks the Return might even make clever comments on this need for nostalgia, but itself it has very defiantly been it's own thing and not a rehash, and thank god for that. Viewers and critics can all be on fire about 'where were you when you saw that hour long epic nuclear demonportal we call part 8 the first time?' and not about 'oh its so nice to see them have pie together at the double R again'. That most famous of episodes/parts also showcases how the Lynch/Frost collaboration has evolved - Episode 8 might be all David Lynch visually, but the topic/mythology reeks of Mark Frost and his interest in the Manhattan project, the occult beliefs of some of its participants regarding the possibility of a certain evil godess being brought into this world via a nuclear blast, woodsmen and lodge activity.

I absolutely HATE that he is using TP to basically showcase bands that he obviously likes/admires. It's so jarring. And I've been listening to Chromatics and NIN for years. But keep them the f**k out of TP. I'm just seeing DKL more and more as a kind of dirty old man and it's disappointing to me because of the esteem I hold him in. But I suppose there's no reason why geniuses should be held up to higher 'moral' standards than anybody else. Focus on the art not the artist right? The problem is that this 'proclivity' of Lynch is spilling over into his work and it's not pretty.
This is interesting to me. For the most part, the bands have been functioning as the rough equivalent of the end credits music on shows like The Sopranos, Breaking Bad and The Leftovers (not exclusively, of course -- we had NIN dropped in the middle of Part 8, and some of the performances are interspersed with actual dialogue scenes, to lesser or greater extents). I'm curious to gauge exactly what troubles you (and I hope my responses in this thread to date have let you know that I'm genuinely curious, not trolling). If the same songs had simply played over black-screen end credits without the bands onscreen, would you feel differently? Is it the fact that these acts are in the world of TP at all, or specifically that they're in the TOWN of Twin Peaks and the Roadhouse (e.g., how would you feel if these acts were playing in a Vegas casino)?

Geez. Most of the posters on this thread have been pretty fair and balanced in expressing their opinions. But what on Earth has LFB ever done besides getting some unfortunate plastic surgery? I just don't see how this kind of thing is called for.

How about squandered her life opportunities and use her sexuality as a form of weapon to gain what she wants, which is pretty much just money. Only to screw it all up with drugs and alcohol and general self destructive behaviour.

Very trashy, low brow stuff indeed.

Should people like that be rewarded and revered? I think not!

This has more to do with the viewer. In norway we have an artist called Aune Sand who is constantly ridiculed by the masses for his art which is defiantly romantic and free from any ironic distance or sarcasm. In many ways its ultranaive. There are aspects of Twin Peaks the Return that work in very much the same way. Episode 13 is perhaps the best example so far. We see several dysfunctional human relationships or examples of lack of contact, and these are starkly contrasted with Dougies innocence and with James Hurleys wonderfully genuine delivery of 'just you' to the woman he is in love with. The roadhouse has in many parts been a report from a society steeped in problems with drugs, infidelity and violence, but tonight we see the power of love presented completely free from ironic distance or coolness. And the womans reaction is that marvelous unabashed 'being moved to tears by a proclamation of love'.There is no other show on TV right now that so earnestly roots for good old fashion love and innocence....certainly not your GoT or Legion, or Daredevil or your various drug-related dramas. Have we ever seen a more powerful statement about innocence vs evil than episode 8 of the Return...set to the tones of Pendereckis threnody for the victims of nuclear fire.

I'm not sure how anyone can seriously see David Lynch and Mark Frost as preachers for perversity. Their work clearly denounces narrowmindedness and coldheartedness and none more than Twin Peaks the return. It speaks of a certain ill intent by someone who isnt content with accepting that he doesnt like something, but feels that the artists owe him/her something and when they haven't delivered at least he will hurt them in return.

If you dont like The Return ...fine. Lots of people do...most serious critics love it. This doesnt make the fans of the show or the critics in NY Times, Vulture, AV, EW, the Guardian, the Independant etc cynical people cheering for the perverse. One might argue it's perverse and malevolent to even imply it.

Eek. Ok. All I'm gonna say is this: I never claimed she should be revered or rewarded, but I don't see the need to shit on her for self-destructive behavior that doesn't harm anyone but herself. (Also, I can't recall ever reading that she uses recreational drugs -- unlike some other TP cast members who have publicly acknowledged that they have, such as Richard Beymer -- but even if she does, I fail to see how it affects your life in any way inspiring such bitterness and anger.)

And with that, I'm tapping out of this particular strain of the conversation.

If it wasn't 'The Return' and was just a pop up series I think more people would appreciate it for what it is...

The trouble is, it isn't.. it is absolutely supposed to be a continuation of the original series... but there is nothing of the original series in it... even the original cast are not the same... with the exception of Benjamin Horne.. the only person in The Return that is who they should be 25 years later....

Benjamin Horne is the only character that truly makes me feel I am back in Twin Peaks.....

It is one of my favourite pictures of her taken by George Barris just a little over three weeks before her tragic accident...

My life is a circle, often things that happen years ago have no meaning at the time, but later develop into life defining moments... much like the original Series of Twin Peaks... that is what defined it as being TV ground breaking and influenced shows like Lost among many others.

Twin peaks was to TV as The Matrix was to Film.

To be fair, I'm not that disappointed with The Return anymore. I certainly don't think it's an unquestionable masterpiece either (yet) but i enjoy watching it and am intrigued by it. My main gripe with it was (and still is) that to me it's not actually a reboot of Twin Peaks, more like a sort of spinoff by and with some of the original creators/cast/locations, where the expectations were created beforehand that it would be a real reboot with prominent roles for the old cast and satisfactory answers to the questions season 2 left us with (lol!). So it's still a bit like being lured into something under false pretenses, maybe being kidnapped almost, but then after being held hostage for so many hours you resignedly settle into it with a comatose smile on your face, mumbling 'yes, yes, wonderful' under your breath.
