The actors keep insisting how much Lynch adores TP but it seemed like this whole venture was a "fuck you" to the original show, actors and fans. I'm not trying to insult Lynch or his fans but really, it's hard for me to see this as anything but Lynch masturbating to himself for 18 hours while flipping the bird to everyone. The fact that it's being lauded as high art by critics just baffles me. I'm saying all this as someone who thinks Lost Highway is a masterpiece and didn't watch TP/FWWM until a few years ago.
I agree with you 100%! Especially on the "enlightened fans" part... daaaaamn, are they obnoxious people!

Before the final episodes, I planned on cheering myself up by doing a write-up of the few positives in The Return. I had some hope that I might be slighty more receptive to the earlier parts when a few plotlines were tied up.

Then, on Sunday, everything in 1-16 was more or less rendered irrelevant.

I'm repeatedly told by critics that this season might again change television. Well, trying to cling on to the positives, there is actually one thing I hope other creators might follow: The slower pace of this show. I like slow television. Not in the sense of floor sweeping, or escorts using forever to get the hell out of the room, but just that meditative sense of not jumping quickly and hurriedly between scenes, or having dialogues sounding like rap battles. Let them play out.

Now, if someone could take a bit of this, and couple it with an actual, interesting story with great characters, some sensibility to weekly, episodic television, and a good bit of cinematic quality, I might be on board for that. Who knows, there might be shows like that out there already - I don't really watch that much television.

I'm pretty envious of those who have enjoyed this season. Deep down, before watching episode 1, I never really believed that I'd feel the same euphoria as back in 1990. But I was completely unprepared for this level of alienation. Once Cooper began fumbling about in Vegas, I got cold chills. I should have heeded the warning signs back then, and begun binging it this week instead. It's been a pretty depressing ride.

Hi, I just registered to talk about the many plot arcs, cliffhangers and characters that got no resolution or ultimately just meant nothing or just were plain underwhelming. Please add your own ideas.

(Disclaimer: I was commenting this show on Reddit until now, but I had to abandon that community. It has become toxic, you can't write anything negative about David Lynch or express your true opinion in any way. David Lynch is perfect in everything he does and all TP:TR scenes are awesome and if you don't agree then you must be stupid. I hope that this forum is more forgiving in that regard. Also, excuse my English if I make a mistake, I'm Spanish.)

1) [Underwhelming] Steven and Becky. I thought Becky was going to be the new Laura Palmer and end up wrapped in plastic or something. In the end, she may or may not be dead. Steven died and nobody felt moved by it. These characters were kind of 'meh'.

2) [Leads nowhere] Red (Balthazar Getty). We end up knowing so little about him, or his relationship with Shelly. He does some cool shit in front of Richard, it looks like he is going to be big, but no. He just fades into black. Meh.

3) [Underwhelming] Richard Horne. At least we get to know that he is indeed Mr. C.'s son. But he killed a boy, he almost killed that woman, he assaulted his grandmother, he joined a gang... only to be vaporized in the end. He looked like a major character that could do something big. Lynch even teased us with the whole "Richard and Linda" thing; it seemed like everything was about him. But in the end, he just... burns. Meh.

4) [Underwhelming] Chantal and Hutch. They looked like big badasses who could be a serious threat to Cooper’s life. Instead, they just get killed in the most random way. Meh.

5) [Underwhelming] Mr. C.’s plan. It seems like he was looking for an entrance to the White Lodge, but he got easily trapped and fooled. He didn’t look menacing anymore, in fact he looked funny in that weird cage. He then enters the Sheriff Station for no particular reason that we could understand, only to be easily taken down. Well, that was an underwhelming final boss. Yes, BOB scaped (I thought he was removed from him in Part 8?) and caused some trouble, but it didn’t look menacing. In fact, that scene seemed quite absurd and funny. Meh.

6) [Underwhelming] Cooper returning to Twin Peaks. He rushes by the entrance sign, goes straight to the Sheriff Station, exchanges a handful of sentences with the locals, and that’s it. I didn’t expected an Asterix ending with everyone eating cherry pie at the RR, but c’mon, that was practically nothing.

7) [Unresolved] Who phoned Mr. C. and said that wanted to be with BOB again? I dare you to find a reasonable explanation to this.

8) [Leads nowhere] Hawk and Log Lady’s prophecies. Think about it. In the end, Hawk did absolutely nothing useful for Cooper. We were so excited thinking that Hawk was going to find Cooper and wake him up. But no, in the end, Cooper waked up by himself, and Hawk did nothing. Margaret did not provide useful information. The only useful thing that they know is that there are two Coopers (so Lucy can safely kill one of them), but that is information is provided by Major Briggs, not the Log Lady. Also, remember that Hawk went to Glastonbury Grove for absolutely no reason.

9) [Underwhelming] Mother/Experiment/Judy. She looked like a big menace who could unleash some serious trouble on Twin Peaks. She looked like the Big Baddy to be defeated. But, in the end, she just… does something to the timeline… or maybe not… not really scary. Also, I don’t understand why a hot actress was cast to play this part. It’s incomprehensible to me. Also, the answer to who is Judy felt extremely underwhelming: it’s an alias for Mother. Ok. It would have been more entertaining if she had been… something else. Meh.

10) [Leads nowhere] Audrey Horne and all of those Roadhouse conversations. I feel like all those random Roadhouse conversations are part of the Audrey storyline (they are happening inside her ‘world’, whatever that is). Could somebody make a total count of how many minutes did we spend on all of that? For what? Billy, Tina, Chuck, Charlie… This is probably the biggest ‘meh’ of all. I don’t think anybody could watch this season again sitting through all those boring conversations again. We thought they were building up to something, but no --they were actually just random boring conversations. And the fate of Audrey is so extremely vague that ultimately means nothing. It could be literally anything.

11) [Underwhelming] The humming sound. Oh, my god, we were so excited, remember? What is that humming sound at the hotel? Is it Josie? Is it Audrey? Is it Laura Palmer? Is it Mother? No. It was just MIKE again strolling the corridors. Meh.

12) [Underwhelming] The hotel room key. For absolutely no reason, that key opens a corridor to The Zone. The same Zone that Cooper is now able to communicate with at will. Meh. Ok.

13) [Leads nowhere] Carl saying a man not to sell his blood. We had so many theories on this one as well, remember? We’ve been tricked: it meant nothing. Again.

14) [Leads nowhere] Renault’s new prostitution bussiness. Remember that floor sweeping and a phone call about prostitutes? Another boring thing that we endured because we thought it meant something. No. Nope. Niet. Nada. It really was five minutes of floor sweeping.

15) [Underwhelming] Naido and Wally. Let me get this straight: Wally did absolutely nothing to save the day. Nothing. Zero. Niet. Nada. Also, nobody wanted to kill Naido; BOB ignores her as he attacks Cooper and Freddie. She turns into Diane for no reason (Cooper does nothing to accomplish this). Why would Mr. C. trap Diane inside the Purple Room? How did he have access to it?

16) [Leads nowhere] Jerry Horne. I read online theories about where Jerry was going to end up, or who he was going to encounter, that were so much more entertaining than what we actually got. So he just ends up in Wyoming naked. Ok. Who cares, again?

17) [Leads nowhere] Beverly. She has a dying husband and is in love with Ben. Ok. So what? Uneventful.

18) [Leads nowhere] Andy meeting with Billy. I think this is part of Audrey’s world, but who could be sure? Anyway, it means nothing and ties into nothing. Same goes for the ‘has anybody seen Billy?’ thing.

19) [Unresolved] Chet Desmond. Who cares about him? Fuck him! Non-existance!

20) [Leads nowhere] Sarah freaking out at the supermarket. One more example of a cool scene that we were sure meant something, but not really. It could mean anything, or nothing. Who cares? Certainly not Lynch.

I could add more in the future.

Also, let me add some personal, controversial opinions:

- The ‘Dougie experience’ now seems even more pointless and fustrating, in retrospective. We were patiently waiting because we thought that it was building to a big return of Cooper to Twin Peaks. But now that all is said and done it seems like Lynch didn’t want Cooper in the show at all. He is present for only a few minutes only to be transformed again into someone else. Lynch didn’t want Cooper in the show, period.

- Sarah being so evil as to destroy Laura’s portrait is the more depressing and dark way to end this story. (I’m sure there won’t be a 4th season; nobody will pay for it.) It seems to me as if Lynch himself would be smashing the Twin Peaks mythos forever.

- I hate time travelling and parallel universes. I am a fan of comic-books, but anytime a character goes back in time to undo events, I’m like ‘OH FUCK HERE WE GO AGAIN’. And now I had to eat a fucking time travelling story in the most unexpected and inconvenient place. Not amused.

- Cooper ends up in an even darker place than at the end of S2. I’m telling you: Lynch hates Twin Peaks, Cooper and Audrey Horne; and even moreso, he hates its fans. It’s the only sensible explanation.

So glad for this thread. I agree with so much I am reading and will be posting in the coming days as I need the cathartic release. I looked forward to this so much and am truly angry with Lynch. Anyway for this post all I wish to say is:

in the early 90s I was so much into the X Files I began taking notes and trying to connect dots and come up with theories on my own. The show went to heck and I vowed never to do that again and never did

In the 2000's I made my own fan edit of scenes of Lost while it was broadcast and the show went to heck and I vowed never to do that again and never did

Now with Peaks I vow never to spend dozens of hours rewatching things in preparation, buying and reading a book in preparation, telling friends how excited I am and trying to get people to watch the original, plopping down $100 to buy the latest upgrade of the show on disc to rewatch in preparation, attending a festival for a show, caring so much and getting so excited.

TV going forward will just be tv, I will never consider it important because it can really screw you. If I watch a show and it is so darn good so be it but I will not elevate it past that ever again.

I don't think Lynch hates TP. I think he hates everything that he didn't have total control over, which means basically the majority of season 1 and 2, and TPTR was his chance to retcon/wipe clean/reshape the entire mythology in his image. In doing so he basically undermined if not totally destroyed the foundation of the show and everything that made it special in the first place. I think his worldview has also changed quite a bit in the past three decades. I think he's much less of a romantic than he used to be, and seems to lean more towards nihilism and pessimism now. TR definitely reflects that.
"That's what I need, a clean place, reasonably priced."

Thank you powerleftist, and welcome, these are some great points, I myself have forgotten about the "I will be with Bob". Yes, Reddit became unbearable, I deleted the app from my phone and stopped going there.

Agree on the verdict too.

The show has been chaotic, so it does not have any logic. If it had any logic to it, it would not be chaotic. Therefore, it does not make any sense, and nothing tangible can be distilled or extracted from it. I said it earlier that the point of it all was to leave its viewer in a disoriented state with a brain set to overload with all these unconnected threads that the brain keeps trying to resolve autonomously. I honestly feel bad for people who spent days and days discussing the editing glitch in the Big Ed's reflection at the end of that episode trying to find any meaning to it.

Thanks for the suggestions. Haven't watched any of these. Might give them a chance once mind and body are healed from The Return.

I just signed up here and left the Reddit forum for the exact same reasons you stated. The people here on Dugpa seem far more civil and open minded as well as willing to engage in actual discussion.

I agree with all your points about how very meaningless everything turned out to be. Maybe that's the point but it doesn't make for an interesting story nor does it really deserve the name of "Twin Peaks". If this had been a separate project without the Twin Peaks or Lynch/Frost names backing it, I feel more people would be far more open to objectively criticising it (in fact there's no way it would have gotten made).

Season 3 has been nothing more than a series a of scenes that come from no where and lead to nothing, but are praised because they truly have so little to them that people can just make up whatever they want them to be. It's a cop out.
Exactly. He could literally film anything and some fans would still try to explain it for him. He could film a little boy playing hula hoop and people would go 'ooohhhh that is the secret son of Audrey Horne' or 'oooooh he is a Lodge spirit'.

In the end, all I want is to be immersed in the fiction. For instance, during the atomic bomb, I was completely mesmerized and thrilled. It was exciting. The whole 'gotta light' thing --It could mean something or not, but it was artistic and well done. I tried to draw some theories from it because it entertained me.

But the ten minute trip from Odessa to Twin Peaks is just B-O-R-I-N-G and uneventful. I don't care about Carrie Page, only because she BORED ME to tears. Is she really Laura? Is Cooper the dreamer? I just don't care.
