We will see the Tracy and Sam scene all over again, only this time Tracy is played by a boy and Sam(antha) is played by a girl! My mind is blown! Boy Tracy bares his buttocks to the camera to appease the lady viewers out there. Genius! Holy moly!

Hell, we don't need to hear a soundtrack -- even though it makes it feel like I'm watching a high school production, it's brilliant! So, no music until -- are you ready for this? -- the last episode will be nothing BUT the soundtrack, and at the very end we will be informed how to purchase it on itunes! Lynch has done it again! Brilliant! Genius!

I have no doubt that Lynch has a large stake in these shitty bands that he's promoting. Twin Peaks: The Return is nothing more than a money grab.

Suckers...

Rain Dog, I guess you won't be sleeping indoors tonight.

Sorry to express that, but this thread is still meant to stay respectful and uptight, even when people are venting about how the new Peaks don't appeal to them.

What you're doing is just throwing random offenses at the series and its creator, only because it didn't meet your tastes and idea of what it "should" resemble.

Please cut the crap.

And btw, I don't wanna read the word "shyster" here anymore. It's actually an anti-Semitic slur.

Other than that, don't put things out of context even though you understand how they're meant - talking about Lynch's recommended viewing setup here, for example. A bigger TV along with a good sound system in a dark room usually works quite fine, not only for Twin Peaks if you haven't tried that out yet.

And,"weather channel"?????
Someone sure is grumpy today.
RESPECTFULLY ramble about the content all you want, but its looks? Seriously" I think it looks great.

And (I should stress it again) I'm NOT brown-nosing here, there's actually quite a few things about Lynch that I'm NOT too fond of personally.

We don't HAVE to love the new show (although I do), but let's still keep your feet on the ground and stay friendly at least. Ok?

Good day sir,

PS: Hi Michael! :P

Hah, raindog's rantings & ravings did get a (guilty) chuckle from me, though that's probably no way to have a measured discussion about the merit of Lynch's latest work on a forum dedicated to Lynch's artistic output and legacy...

Reading over this thread, I've seen a few comments to the effect of 'well no one can really know what Frost really thinks of what Lynch has done with the material they collaborated on together...'. Frost has a Twitter. Follow it. His tweets have been proud and glowing concerning the premiere and all the critical praise it's getting, including one choice reaction to a sour viewer calling out Lynch (sorry would have to dig to find the link but it stuck with me), "Show some respect". Frost and Lynch obviously enjoy working with each other a lot, having tried to start up multiple collaborative projects together such as "Goddess" and "The Lemurians" before making it big with Twin Peaks. While I definitely see Lynch's evolved directorial style on full bast with the Return (Lynch is just a different filmmaker post-Inland Empire than he was two decades ago during Peaks), I also see definite evidence of Frost in the background crafting the threads of multiple connected plotlines, adding implications of mechanics to what would, for better or worse, probably be far more vague and inscrutable under Lynch alone (compare the scenes about Dougie Jones in the Red Room to the full Room Above the Convenience Store scene in the Missing Pieces and tell me which leaves more room for interpretation) and setting up foreshadowing for what's to come in the narrative in later Parts.

Not meaning to imply that I'm some mindless Lynch sycophant who thinks whatever he makes is absolute brilliance. On the contrary, while I'm definitely enjoying the Return more than some here, I have questions about some aspects of it that I'm still not sure about. Since I'm here, I might as well share a few worries I've had so far.

I'm worried that so far Lucy's characterization seems really unflattering to her. Like she's manic and actually mentally-handicapped or suffering from progressive degenerative mental disease or something. Lynch seems to like characters to be the most extreme and absurd versions of themselves and, with most of his film characters, since we never see them any other way it feels consistent. But with Lucy, we see her through the whole original series and it isn't all that high-octane absurd one-note. Lucy always seemed smarter than Andy to me and now I'm just not sure what to make of what's going on with her.

I'm also worried that Frost's heavy-handed writing may suck some of the ominous mystique out of the otherworldly dialogue by making it a little too scrutable, lacking that mysterious, alien riddle quality so much of that speech feels like it carries in the series and in FWWM. EDIT: Like his "Rabbits" series, featured in Inland Empire, actually. The way he has perfected the creation of what I would call "non-linear dialogue".

Interesting points StealThisCorn.

Lucy used to be ditzy and Andy slow witted but kind. Now they've gone full retard (that's not meant offensively but I think Tropic of Thunder has made it an acceptable populist/humorous expression). It's very troubling to me and is a strong piece of evidence to support the view that The Return is actually nasty. I'm fine with darkness, I love it in fact. FWWM was incredibly dark but had enormous empathy and, actually, love. So far I wouldn't classify The Return as dark but as nasty. The former can be great, I will never have much time for the latter. If I wanted that I could watch an Eli Roth film.

Even the scene with Bobby felt a little bit like that. It's a difficult scene for me because at once it's the closest I have felt The Return has come to the original but it felt mocking to me. As somebody said they all just left Bobby hanging. From what I remember when Bobby cried in Jacobi's office, Jacobi showed him a good deal of warmth. Plus this was almost too sudden, it just felt 'off' somehow. I love Bobby and seeing Bobby grieve for Laura (most notably in Episode 14 although this wasn't made explicit) breaks my heart. But there was something off here.

The point people keep making about Lynch needing to do something different, to move forward. Ok, point taken and I understand the merit of it. The best I can say of The Return so far is that it's certainly something I've never seen on television before and nobody could accuse Lynch of pandering to a mass audience.

I don't understand when people say they think this looks great. It looks terrible to me, absolutely terrible. I don't know anything about budgeting, film or digital but this looks like it's been shot on an iPhone or something. Where the hell has all the money gone? If this is Lynch's true vision for Twin Peaks and I happen not to like it, I can accept that. But if it really is just a cash grab/opportunity to put women he's, um, involved with up on screen then that's pretty rotten, especially if in the process he's giving the middle finger to his fans. But maybe I'm going too far in saying this and it's not that I'm convinced it's true, just my worst fear (probably a paranoid one).

Yeah, Lucy was never this stupid. She was definitely smarter than Andy. I cringed at her manic scream when she falls out of her chair after seeing a cell phone. Come on. It's not like cell phones didn't exist in 1990 (bulky ones sure). Even Ernie Niles brings one to town in the original series. Plus, after seeing that backroom in the Sheriff’s Station, with all its modern equipment and extra officers (like the one who makes fun of Margaret), it makes it seem like the new Sheriff Truman just humors Lucy by letting her keep her job at the front desk because he doesn’t want her to have a nervous breakdown or something, and she spends her time making concerned calls about what "really" goes on with the thermostat when "no one is there", while all the real police work is now handled in that backroom.

I took Bobby’s moment when he chokes up at seeing Laura’s portrait was a nice homage to the tearful melodrama of the Pilot. It really stands out amidst the tone we’ve had so far in this series. I'll remind you though that when Andy choked up upon seeing Laura wrapped in plastic on that rocky beach, Truman and Doc Hayward had no patience for it.

Audio =/= music

If you can't recognise the absolutely incredible depths of the sound design - which so far has played more importance than conventional music - then you're either listening over tin can speakers or you need your ears checked.

Is it that they've written it that way or that for Lucy and Andy or, and I can't believe I am saying this as they were wonderful in the other series, that Kimmy's and Harry's acting is just not up to par this time round? Their acting reactions to Wally, for example, look like they'd done the take about 20 times and were verging towards a little manic and not great. That or it was a one take shot and seemed more like a rehearsal that should have been shot again. Or were they told to act that way. Either way, the shots got through.

Shovels. All I can say is Jacoby better have about 200 gold shovels in the back shed. He put a lot of time into that painting rig of his for 5 shovels. Otherwise, I don't get it and it was a crap scene.
The Chromatic were PERFECT to me.

Hi, yes. I'd never heard of The Chromatic's before but I liked them. It's a bit weird ending on a band like that but I think they fit in well. There was another band too, three girls with synths (again no idea who they were!) but I liked their music and the way they fit in too. I take it we aren't going to see Julee Cruise?

Some have speculated we'll go out with Julee in the last episode when some huge twist and reveal occurs. Who knows? She IS listed in the cast.

As for Andy and Lucy. They were the low point for me in 3 & 4 and one of the reasons I still visit this thread because overall I'm over my profound disappointment.

But my wife who wasn't pleased with 1 & 2 liked Lucy's antics and liked Wally.

The funny thing is I've probably been listening to the Chromatics longer than David Lynch (ok I can't prove that but I suspect it since I've been a fan since they first emerged) but I didn't like their appearance on Twin Peaks. Actually I've heard that Rage Against The Machine are going to re-group and appear in Episode 7. Ok, that isn't true......

I do take the point that while there is an absence of music, it doesn't mean there isn't incredibly sound engineering/a great soundscape. All I can say is that it's not doing for me what the music in the original did. And I still want to know - what has Badalamenti contributed so far? Would anyone on here argue that his contribution in The Return has been equal to his contribution in the original/FWWM? If you agree that it hasn't then surely you have to agree that one of the most vital pieces of the puzzle is either missing or being woefully underused. I'm not blaming Angelo, he is old. I'm just saying that the first series had Angelo and for all intents and purposes The Return doesn't. For me, that's important.

I sent Agent 327 a similar request. My guess was Islamic terrorism but not sure if I can say that here or not.
