a few people elsewhere on the net, also mentioned in a thread here somewhere, make a convincing timeline case for Cooper/Carrie at Sarah Palmer's house ending being on 10/10/2015 - the actual date it was filmed.

Link? Also pertinent to note that the only reason the original show starts on 2/24/89 is that that was the filming date for Dale talking to Diane while entering town (the script has a different date).

Re: Season 3 Timeline (SPOILERS)

Post by counterpaul »

I may have had a breakthrough. I decided to cut through all the clutter and focus on the storylines that directly intersect: Mr. C's various shenanigans; the events in Buckhorn; the FBI investigation (Gordon, Albert, and Tammy's adventures); and the Twin Peaks Sheriff's Department's investigation into Coop's disappearance (so, only the stuff in Twin Peaks directly related to Margaret's call to Hawk stating that "something is missing involving Agent Dale Cooper").

Everything else happening (in New York and Twin Peaks) can fit in pretty much anywhere, actually. The only temporal requirements are that Richard robs Sylivia in time to be at The Farm when Mr. C shows up and that Ben gets the Great Northern key in time to give it to Frank. Am I wrong about that? Are there any other hard temporal connections between the other storylines?

Anyway, by looking closely at these key interrelated storylines, I realized pretty quickly that there are a number of moments that constrain where things can be on the timeline. As I tried various configurations, options were eliminated at one point or another (because something in one plotline had to set up something in another), until I hit on the one below.

I think this all works. And it's also fairly elegant. The only part that kind of bugs me is that it requires that the FBI crew sits in Yankton for a day after Diane speaks to Mr. C. In fact, they'd have to be in Yankton following Mr. C's escape, and not hear about it for more than 24 hours. I think I can live with this, though. Let's just say they had to wait for a plane for some reason, and that Warden Murphy takes a day to try and cover his tracks. There's no other way to sync things up so that (a) Mr. C calls Duncan before he (Duncan) sends Anthony to the Mitchum brothers, and (b) the FBI interview with Hastings happens on 9/29. Since everything else falls into place so well, I'm willing to live with that weird day off in Yankton.

Anyway, here's what I have (again, focusing only on these key storylines for now):

Love this resource! One question though: why do you place the Chromatics performances on two different days, considering they wear the same clothes in both?

EDIT: More importantly, if Steven's probable death is on 10/1 and Carl finds out about it that day, I feel like Bobby wouldn't be at work the next day, relatively calm (aside from some surprise at seeing Cooper) - rather he'd be handling the violent death of his son-in-law and possibly (gulp) his daughter. Hence I feel like Steven's suicide should be placed around the time the Bob ball is destroyed (which is interesting in its own right of course). I don't think there's anything else demanding it take place a day earlier, is there?

A potential hang-up with any timeline (and reminder that Lynch/Frost probably hadn't worked out anything concrete)...the Coop/Dougie storyline appears to take place over 6 days (before he electrocutes himself), and every one of those is a workday.

Thanks! Yes, for those two scenes (and for many others), I had really difficulties to place them. Doing a timeline shows you that "time" is really a subjective thing, on this third season.

For Steven, your idea is good. I guess I will change it to the 10/2. But who knows if Stevens kills himself? Maybe he just shoots at the trees - the trees that seemed to scare him a little. Everything is possible. Maybe that scene occurred a long time ago, and that's why Becky is worried about Steven being missing since "two days" in one episode?

Well, nevertheless, I'll change it to October 2 ;)

For the Chromatics scenes, at first I did it like you say. Then it felt wrong for Shelly, being just a bit worried about Steven - it must happen before Becky's crisis. But I wanted to place that scene later because in Part 12 (second Chromatics scene), Trick is talking about a crazy guy with his truck - in my totally subjective idea, he was talking about Mr C and Richard driving to "the place" with the stone... But maybe it is Billy... Or Richard alone...
So, those two scenes could happen the same night, but which night? The 24th based on Shelly and James situations, maybe? Or the 30th based on "the truck"? Or in between, if Trick is talking about Richard or Billy?

I think part of me regrets that everyone is finding it so much easier to slot everything into 2016. I did like the idea of "25 years later" making it 2014. (Plus it's kinda nice as the show's narrative ends right around the time Lynch & Frost actually announced The Return!)

Any chance we can still shoehorn it into being 2014? What are the major roadblocks - the Hastings stuff?

EDIT: Ok, from the original timeline I'm gathering that the main constraints are Hastings' arrest being a Saturday and the weather report being a Wednesday, right?

One other question - the original post on this thread says Coop's arrest report is on 9/22 but you place it on 9/25 - is this just something that was impossible to reconcile?

EDIT: Yeah, I'm trying to do so now in both 2014 and 2016 and it just doesn't fit. Even if Coop/Dougie's whole office works on weekends, his first three days in Vegas have to follow one another directly based on various clues. Ike attacks him on his third day (his second day at work) which would be a Sunday - already problematic - and then he's arrested on a Monday. Why would the news wait until Wednesday to report this? So yeah, 9/22 just doesn't fit.

Maybe 2014 is the year where Cooper meets Laura, in Odessa. He finally sees her 25 years later ("I'll see you in 25 years"... in Odessa, as Carrie Page). So, maybe the answer to "what year is this?" is 2014.

But when Cooper comes back, first as Dougie-Dale, then as himself at the end of season 3, it may be in 2016.

Yes, the date of 9/22 doesn't fit. The only way it could fit: Ruth dies on the 9/15. Then, the show would do lots of ellipsis (nothing happening for days), but it doesn't seem too be that way.

Another question: you place Sylvia's call to Ben on a Wednesday and the second "hum" scene (when Ben tells Beverly he can't) on a Friday. I think I understand why based on Ben's ties and the necessity of Sylvia's call happening on that particular day. However, it's problematic in a narrative way - unlike most "out of order" scenes, this one would notably change the arc we witness onscreen. If Sylvia calls Ben *before* the second "hum" scene, it means he declines her advances *after* asking her to dinner, which reverses the information as the show presents it to us. I wonder if there's a way to switch the order of those scenes?

EDIT: Nope. The costuming strongly suggests (not only Beverly's top but Ben's tie look the same) that Frank's visit and the second hum are the same day (though it's not entirely clear which order they happen in, not that it matters for this discussion). And it's hard for me to imagine that Frank is able to tell Ben about Richard's killing spree within hours of him trying to kill Miriam (for one thing, the letter arriving suggests Richard is still in town the next day when supposedly the whole sheriff's crew would be out looking for him), and (more importantly) it's even harder to imagine that Sylvia waits a full day (for the costume change) to tell Ben that Richard attacked her.

I may be alone in this but I have always interpreted the phonecall scene between Ben and Sylvia differently than most people I've seen write about it. After Sylvia hangs up and Ben asks, "Beverly, do you want to have dinner with me?"... it feels to me like Beverly has already gone home for the day. She's not even there to hear him ask that, but after that call with Sylvia and the stress of it, Ben verbalizes what it is he really wants (to spend time with Beverly) and he says it then because it's "safe" to do so (Beverly isn't even there).

Certainly, with things being edited out of (what we imagine to be) the script order, it leaves all of this open to interpretation anyway, but that's how it played for me. Figured I'd throw that idea out there.
