The today-date is not past, is present. At 7PM the day is not over. Weather forecast work like this here. Does it work like that there or not?
Definitely not.

Where are we now, is this still 9/30 because no one cared for Jack Rabbit's yet?

A very dense chapter, with lots of informations.
Some thoughts:
- We see the Chromatics and Sarah Palmer in this episode. We saw Sarah and the Chromatics in Part 2. Is end of Part 2 a flash-forward?
- The scene with Jacoby seems to invite us to be aware of the exploded timeline in Twin Peaks. That scene was in Part 5. Maybe the scene just after in Part 5 (Richard at The Roadhouse, with Chad) was also a flash-forward (that would mean that Richard gives money to Chad after the accident). But, in that scene with Jacoby in Part 5, Jerry was watching his show in the woods, probably just before he got high...
- Ben and Beverly are dressed the same way that in Part 9 (second humming scene, where Ben refused Beverly's advances). The scene in Part 12 with Beverly, Ben, and Frank Truman, probably happens just after.

I'd say we definitely saw another extension of Day 10 here, with the exception of the scene of Coop and Sonny Jim--which seems to be Saturday morning, 10/1. I'm thinking that everything else happened on Day 10 (9/30). The generally forward-moving, but semi-non-linear, arrangement of scenes continues.

Day 9-10 (9/29-9/30) seem to have been a jam-packed couple of days!

Now I'm wondering if we'll catch up with COOPER and see what he's been up to since the morning of 9/29 before we get to Jack Rabbit's Palace. We shall see!

Just a thought about Dougie-Dale scene in this Part. We see only one scene with him and Sonny-Jim. Like you I'm 99% sure that it happens after the restaurant scene with the Mitchums. But we can notice that Sonny Jim is dressed just the same way as in Part 4-5. He has the same sweater, same pants, same shoes. (and he had different clothes in Part 10).
The episode shows us Dr Amp show from Part 5 too. Does that indicate that the scene with Dale happens on the day of Part 5 too?
Once again, it's just Sonny-Jim's clothes, so maybe it's not supposed to mean all that. Or we will discover in Part 13 what's happening after that piano scene in Part 11. There is also the fact that Mister C. hasn't been seen since the beginning of Part 9, just after the scene with the woodsmen and what seemed to be the extraction of Bob from his stomach...

TSHOTP spoiler
Spoiler:
Soooo Return is a month after Tammy after gets the dossier?
For him the weather broadcast happens on a thursday. What do you think?

He doesn't take into acount Lucy's sweater thing between part 9 and 10, nor the idea that Miriam's letter arrives the following day.
There is no way the weather forecast scene takes place on a Thursday. The television shows temps for Thursday day and Thursday night. It is already night when they see the weather report meaning Thursday day would already be over. Therefore it has to be Wednesday night.
Wrong. I don't know where you're from but a Thursday night forecast here in the states would include the current days temps.

Hi. First post.

Audrey's husband, Charlie, says it's a new moon that night, which fits perfectly with the end of September/early October of the year 2016, although that would mean that Andy's watch (part 7) was set on the wrong date.

http://www.calendar-12.com/moon_calendar/2016/october

However, that shot of the moon just before we look in on Jacoby, would have to be a few days earlier. Likewise the shot of the moon we saw in Part 10, just before entering the Roadhouse, would have to be a week earlier.

I open to discussion but when would an extended forecast include temps from earlier in the day. Never seen it.

I don't watch TV news much these days, but I've definitely seen it. "The high today got up to 110, folks, but tomorrow will be even toastier!" That kind of thing.

Whether it's a goof on the part of the TPTR graphics team or whether this happens in real-life news reports, it seems like Day 9 was indeed meant to be a Thursday because Coop isn't at work on what I'm taking to be Day 11. It makes sense, too:

Monday - Coop arrives at Rancho Rosa, misses work (been gone three days, so he also missed work on Friday)
Tuesday - Coop goes to work, after having missed the "last two days of school" and gets the case files
Wednesday - Coop goes to work and hands the case files in; gets attacked by Ike on the way out
Thursday - Coop gets the day off to talk to police and see Doctor Ben (Mitchums see the news report about attack "yesterday")
Friday - Coop goes to work and Bushnell sets up the meet with the Mitchums
Saturday - Coop is off, gets conked on the head by Sonny Jim's baseball

Re: Season 3 Timeline (SPOILERS)

Post by counterpaul »

Thanks, Hockey Mask!

I would definitely argue that the scene with Coop and Sonny Jim has to take place on Day 11. On day 10, he went to work first thing in the morning and stayed out almost certainly past dark with the Mitchums, so when would he have been able to "play catch?"

Below is my revised chronological Day 10-11.

I do wonder about the business in Buckhorn. Noting Diane's shirt, when she looks up the coordinates, she's wearing the green shirt she had on at the Buckhorn police department. When she's deputized, and when she sends the text, she's changed into a red shirt. There are two pretty much equally likely possibilities here as I see it: (1) it's all on Day 10 and she looked up the coordinates right when they got back to the hotel from the police department, before the bar opened, and then changed into the red shirt later for a night out; or (2) the scene in the green shirt takes place on Day 10 and the scenes in the red shirt take place on Day 11. Either way the scenes are out of chronological order.

For now, it seems more likely that it all happened on Day 10 because 10/1 is poised to be pretty important. It's possible that nothing much will happen in Buckhorn on Day 11--Cole just initiates Tammy into Blue Rose and then hangs out with his lady friend--but I guess we'll see.

Anyway, here's my rough take on the chronology of Day 10-11 so far:

DAY 10 (Sept 30)
10.10 Janey-E shows appreciation to Dougie-E about "last night".
10.11 Jerry in the woods.
09.10 Andy and Lucy argue about what color chair to buy.

10.03 Steve attacks Becky.
11.14 Bushnell does push-ups at his desk, Mitchum brothers case was not arson, Mitchums want to meet Dougie at 5:30, $30,000,000 check.
12.02 Jerry comes out of the woods.
12.03 Sarah buys liquor and cigarettes and sees jerky, warns cashier and leaves.

The fact that Ben doesn't tell Frank Truman that Richard has attacked Sylvia may indicate that this scene is happening the 29/9 too... maybe! And the clothes of Ben and Beverly are the same than in their scene in Part 9.

With the Dr Amp's scene, the clothes of Sonny Jim, the story of Billy (mentioned in Part 7), the Chromatics, this episode may really have a weird timeline! And Chantal and Hutch: maybe they waited 3 days to do the job asked by Mister C., but that's weird too. Maybe their scene happens the 28 or the 29 too.

Here is my attempt on the chronology with Part 12: http://tp3theories.canalblog.com/archiv ... 86398.html
And the potential clues in Part 12: http://tp3theories.canalblog.com/archiv ... 21475.html

I've been trying to figure out the somewhat maddening chronology of The Return especially since it became clear that multiple nights had passed since they were supposed to go to Jack Rabbit's. That said, I'm surprised to see people are committed to the idea that the days are out of sync - or have started to fall out of sync! I wonder if this is by design for some confusing reason (I've heard arguments about alternate realities but it feels way too schematic to be Lynch and too random to be Frost). Or if it's simply a result of rearranging scenes to fit an episodic structure after the fact. Or both.

Maybe it's the evolution of David Lynch towards a more "cerebral" cinema - I mean, going more inside the brain of his characters since FWWM, and then in Lost Highway, MD, IE... - that makes us wonder if each scene is a dream, a reminiscence, a flash-forward... The original seasons of TP weren't like that, nor Eraserhead, Elephant Man, Dune and Blue Velvet. They were surrealists too but in a more linear way, in terms of narration.

Here in "The Return", we travel through time and space, and it feels foggy probably on purpose. I think that the scenes in Twin Peaks are particularly out of sync because Cooper is absent from the town, whereas the other scenes (Buckhorn, Las Vegas...) are more easy to follow because we follow the story of Cooper(s) in them.

The sentences of the One-Armed-Man are like a program. "Is it future or is it past", and "Something is wrong". In Twin Peaks, the non-chronological editing of the scenes makes us feel that "something is wrong". It's like we are missing important facts, that something is happening, but we can't know what because we don't see events in the right order.

I think things continue to move in a broadly linear manner, but that Lynch is grouping scenes thematically and tonally for this section of the narrative. It's chronological on a macro level, but non-linear on a micro level.

Since the events of Part 8, very little story time has gone by--just two days. I think what Lynch and Dunham were faced with was the task of getting a whole lot of characters where they needed to be for 10/1, when Bobby, Hawk, and Frank arrive at Jack Rabbit's Palace, and they decided that strict chronology, at this point in the overall narrative, didn't work as well as grouping different threads of the narrative together in chunks.

Between Parts 9-12, I'm fairly certain that everything we've seen has taken place on either 9/29 or 9/30, except for the very short scene of Coop getting hit by the baseball, which I believe is on the morning of 10/1.

Pick any particular plot thread (Vegas, Buckhorn, the hit and run, the Twin Peaks investigation of Coop, Becky's crisis, Sarah's meltdown, etc.) and that story is being told in a very linear fashion. The momentum moves ever forward. It's just in the intercutting between these plot threads that things get less linear. This creates the opportunity to group scenes together that would otherwise have been hours apart (Becky's rampage and the scene at the RR, for example), and to find nice thematic/tonal/rhythmic juxtapositions.

My guess is that once we start covering the events leading directly up to Jack Rabbit's Palace, things will get more linear because I have a suspicion that every thread will in some way be affected by the dates and times on Briggs's note.

In the meantime, things are gradually falling into place. I'm not sure whether we'll get there next week or not. There is the question of what COOPER has been up to. I'm wondering if we'll catch up with him and Ray before we get to the events of 10/1. It would make sense, tonally, to group a bunch of COOPER scenes together, so we'll see.
