I think that's something that happens most of the time when watching a new movie (or anything else really). Unless it's extremely simple, you're gonna try to piece everything together, from the story to the characters. That's why (with good movies) a rewatch makes them that much better, as you can focus on the details way better.
With Lynch movies (and TP) it's nearly essential I'd say.

Sure.
Either way I'm going to watch it.
But I'd certainly enjoy it more with a restored Cooper and amped up liveliness

Cooper as we knew him is probably not coming back for several episodes, maybe not until the finale. I do think he'll gradually become more and more functional as each episode moves along, but it will take a while.

Episode 7 finally convinced me of this. Loved it. Hanging in there now for the return of the heart of Twin Peaks

I just want to say it's been years since I've been this riveted and engrossed in a TV show. (I say this as a fan of television.) Mad Men was probably the last one that I was invested in at this level. The Return has just been so satisfying for me, both as a TP and Lynch fanboy but also as a TV geek.

The only thing better than watching The Return week to week is to watch all 7 hours in a row and to see how well planned and thematically rich it is.

One of the greatest artistic achievements of film or TV. A groundbreaking moment in American surrealism and the avant garde.

It flows wonderfully. I get so mad when I read "episode" recaps that try to review the thing from an episodic standpoint. I know that's how it's been released, but it's still obviously not how it's supposed to be gauged.

I agree- that' why I can't understand the people who are rushing to judgment about the new series- at least wait until the whole thing is over. It took me a long time to grapple with Eraserhead, Lost Highway and Inland Empire- it's going to take a whole lot longer with The Return.

I was frustrated by the first couple episodes but after watching them again and letting go of any preconceived notions of what the return should be I've found it much more enjoyable. I think part of my initial concern is that it was too abstract and that other people would quit watching. Their is part of me that was hoping this would be a big hit and reach a mass audience so as to reward all the people that have been part of the revival. I'm also pleasantly surprised by how good an actor Lynch is and the chemistry between Albert and Cole; great stuff and outside of Evil Coop my favorite part of the return so far.

Right out of the gate, you could hear millions of TVs turning off when the first scene was total abstract surrealism...

I loved it and I am so glad it started out that way. But the price to paid was that this show had no hope of gaining a big audience.

So be it...
"Dougie is COOPER? How the Hell is this!?"

Big audiences are counterproductive. They demand that the writers pander to popular notions of narrative.

On another note, watching the old series, it's so different now that I've seen the older versions of the characters. Looking at Shelly, for example, and knowing she has Becky. Crazy!

How is this show doing for Showtime financially at this point, if that's known? I'm not sure how premium channels make money except by subscribers, as they don't air regular commercials. I'm hoping that, even if the show turns out to be an artistic failure overall (as is looking likely), it at least allows Showtime to have a satisfactory return on their investment. I can't recall one person being given such total creative freedom and control over a TV show, and the fact that they did that should be rewarded.

"An artistic failure overall" is an even more subjective statement than usual in this case since most of the reviews for each episode are still very positive, and I'd bet money that the show figures big on year end lists, which is as good a barometer as any if you're trying to track artistic success in an objective fashion. It seems you're making a more personal statement, which is usually valid, except in cases such as this when you're trying to determine a more or less objective standard for measuring the show's success.

As far as the rest of your question, I think many have said that Showtime's money was probably made back thru the selling of international rights and streaming deals. They also had their biggest influx of subscribers ever for the premiere. I think somebody else could answer that question better than me, though.

Uh, what? Not even being a Twin Peaks fanboy, but, the reviews have been pretty overwhelmingly positive.

I think the commercial success is currently up for debate however (and we probably won't really know how Showtime feels about the figures until long after the numbers have lost relevancy)
