Plane windows code (SPOILERS)

Post by PandemoniumSeesaw »

Has anyone noticed that in Part 7, when Diane decides to visit DoppelCoop, we get a very short shot of the plane from the outside and the plane windows start blinking? At first it has been speculated that it was just the reflection of the sun to cause this effect, but that has been disproven by the fact that it would be a very unnatural reflection and that the frames look edited. So, I cannot imagine that but being some sort of code. I tried to crack it but with no luck. We have 6 windows. I tried the following two approaches:
  • Every window represents a number, 1 to 6, and the presence of that window sums that number, so, for instance the configuration where all 6 windows are present means 1+2+3+4+5+6=21, if the last window is missing then we have 1+2+3+4+5=15 and so on. This would give a sequence of numbers between 0 and 21. Translating them to letters of the alphabet does not yield anything interesting (in fact, the alphabet has 26 letters so it would be pretty strange to have numbers up to 21).
  • Every window represents a bit in a six-bit string. Trying to represent these as numbers or as ASCII letters did not yield anything interesting as well
The sequence I found by checking the shot frame by frame is pasted here:

Might any of the other numbers explicitly mentioned in the series relate to the code? 430, 253, 1-1-9 and so on. There are 43 of those 6-bit strings in that sequence. Something to do with 430?

Or perhaps Cole's speech about the spiritual finger (the second one from the left) is related? "Flip them over" -> flip the bits?

Or Cole's misquotation of DoppelCoop:

"I'm yrev very happy to see you again old friend" instead of
"It's yrev very good to see you again old friend"

The first and the fourth words differ. (Though I don't think Cole says "yrev", so possibly the second word differs too.)

I know the blinking was added in post-production (since the source of the footage was found on reddit as a commercial for this plane).

But since nobody came up with an interpretation I am convinced that it was just to make it look better with a sun reflection.

Of course we can invoke "death of the author" and find a meaning to the shot which would be just as good as whatever was Lynch's intention but I doubt it to ever happen and not be way too far fetched. (I know that I sound condescending and I do apologize but I could not find a better phrasing)

It seems gratuitous to just add sunlight reflection on the windows. I mean it's a real shot of a real plane, it looks pretty good and realistic without it. Although any explanation seems gratuitous. When you slow down the footage it looks a little too odd for it to be sunlight reflection simulation. Admittedly, when I first saw it after I'd heard there was something odd, I immediately dismissed it as nothing more than a reflection, but it's been proven pretty conclusively that it's more than that. What it is I really have no clue though. David Lynch weirdness is like an old hat for me, but this is weird in a way I can't quite wrap my head around.

I worked out the binary to decimal on it, but I don't see anything significant.

There's also a seventh 'blinking area' in the tail (can't say if it's a window or a light)

Glad to see there are other nerds on dugpa. :) It looked immediately looked unnatural to me, and I idly wondered whether there was something hidden there, but didn't pursue it.

I don't know if there's really some sort of message encoded there, but it's not totally implausible, given this. It seems like there was a nerd on the FX team. I'm not convinced there's something there, but if someone's interested in pursuing further, some other stuff to consider might be:

- I'd have also assumed that the "white" windows were 1s
- "Flipping", as others mentioned, might imply XOR-encoding, so that the message is actually given by the state-changes in each bit.
- the message is packed in 6-bit 'bytes', but may be expanded in 8-bit bytes
- or 7 bits
- the message may not be text; it could be something like an IP address
- this is probably nonsense :)

I think I've cracked the code:

"You've been Lynched."
