I think this is a completely valid area of discussion and pretty much essential to any analysis of Lynch, but good lord is most of the discourse on it utterly shallow and insipid. That SFGate piece describes the Sam/Tracy sex scene as being "framed from Sam's POV." This is the problem when culture writers try to talk about film. They just flat out don't have the understanding of the medium they're trying to grapple with, so they try to reverse engineer things to prove their conclusion.

And if I have to see the term "male gaze" thrown around by one more person who's never heard of Laura Mulvey much less read the piece where she coined the term I'm going to blow my brains out.

I am very torn on whether The Return is sexist or not, and if it is, to what extent. Or, if the show is exposing misogyny and confronting viewers with it. Maybe a combination of all these things.

That's 90% of thinkpiece writers these days. They don't like their beat - especially many of the nerdcore/film/TV writers - but they fake it for the portfolio/book deal. As a result it always ends up being about themselves or the thesis they came in with. It's the endless audition piece.

I vehemently disagree with the take on Janey-E as a materialist bitch and that's all I have to say about that.
