What were the most impactful scenes of TP:TR?

Post by Nighthawk »

Like it says in the topic's subject. There were plenty of great moments in TP:TR, many of which I can't remember now. I will have to rewatch the whole thing, which I will probably do in a few months as right now the ending is still too fresh in my memory. In the meantime, I am trying to recall the best scenes and I was wondering what were everyone else's.

The things that stuck to me the most in the end was everything surrounding the Palmer house and Sarah. I was really creeped out watching her in that dilapitated room filled with cigarette butts and trash, just waiting for something horrible to walk into the field of vision. Of course nothing did, most of the creepiness happened offscreen including Sarah's awful moaning and noise in the kitchen during Hawk's visit. The exception was Sarah's desperate attack on the memory of Laura, punctuated with destroying her photo with a glass shard. I thought that this was perhaps the most powerful scene of TP:TR.

There were tons of powerful scenes throughout the entire season. The scenes that moved me the most were the ones with Agent Cooper and Janey-E and Sonny Jim. I loved when he hugged them at the end and said "You've made my heart so full." I loved the whole Dougie Jones arc, it was a great way to explore the human aspect of Agent Cooper. I also really loved the scene with Agent Cooper sees the American flag and you can see a look of rememberance in his eyes like he's trying to "wake up". Similarly to the look he had when he saw Sonny Jim and started crying.

My favorite scene in the show, by far, was Albert and Gordon after meeting with Doppelganger Cooper. Incredible scene (as soon as Tammy walked away).

Perhaps this is cheating, but the repurposed b&w Laura/James scene from Fire Walk With Me was just absolutely shattering.

Second favorite would be the entire "this is the chair" sequence. It was so 1990 and made me feel good inside, especially with Bobby's bittersweet smile.

So many, but I'd say these are the ones I liked the best:

- Cooper saying goodbye to Janey-E and Sonny Jim
- the final scene
- Cooper in the "mauve room"
- the nuclear blast/the Fireman creating Laura orb
- Diane and Bad Coop in prison

Part 4: Gordon, Albert & Tammy interview DoppelCoop at the prison

Part 8: The entire episode

Part 12: Sarah Palmer freaks out at the grocery store

Part 18: Dale (Richard) & Carrie's exchange with Alice Tremond

Too many.

- Cooper's head whipping around, as the pianist hits the first few notes of 'Heartbreaking'.

- The end credits of Part 18; Cooper, Laura and 'Dark Space Low'.

- The end of Part 2; all the lodge, Cooper in the glass box, and Chromatics at the Roadhouse.

- The Fireman creating Laura's orb and Senorita Dido's poignant, loving stare.

- Cooper trying to take Laura "home" in the events of Fire Walk with Me. When the colour floods back into the frame.

- Carl Rodd trying to comfort the mother after the hit-and-run. His devastation, his condolence, his inability to do anything. He conveys it all without words.

- Ed and Norma reunited. The way the love radiates out into the landscape.

- Bill Hastings' arrest and first questioning.

- It's only really settled in how weird it is that Miriam is the same person as the impossibly cheerful woman who orders pie. She is a teacher.

Hard to pick just a few but for me:

Part 8: The whole thing was incredible, but the first scene where we see the Woodsmen with Moonlight Sonata slowed down really moved me. It set such a high emotional bar and the episode just didn't drop from that point until the end. As I was watching that scene, I'm sure others felt to, that we were in for a treat.

Notable mentions for the Threnody... section and the Woodsmen poem section.

Part 1: The Purple Room sequence was great, along with Mr C's introduction.

Part 16 (?): Audrey's Roadhouse scene.

Part ?: Sarah's Turkey Jerky scene, and Hawk's later visit. Grace Zabriskie has been incredible this season and has unsettled me almost as much as her performance in Inland Empire.

So many for me, many of them already mentioned. But I'd have to say it was Cooper's ill-fated rescue mission, especially Laura '89 addressing Cooper and the erasure of her body, wrapped in plastic, from Pete's fishing trip. It was something I'd imagined and wanted to see and when I saw it happen it was just shattering.
I've already gone places. I just want to stay where I am.

In no particular order, these are some scenes that stood out: the Woodsman's kills and poem, Dougie in the casino, Sarah freaking out at the store and killing at the bar, Mr. C's scene with Darya, the arm wrestling, Dougie and the old woman in the restaurant, the sick girl in the car, Dougie can't piss, Freddie and James, the Audrey/Charlie scenes, the Log Lady "Laura is the one" scene, Ben and his bike, Ike spiking, Mr. C's jail interview, Mr. C puking. I might even give honorable mention to the Steven/Gersten scene. I wanted to kill myself when I first watched it, but on rewatch, it grew on me a bit ("Look at me, I'm a high school graduate. I'm a high school graduate").

So many good moments, but thinking back, it's just a shame the whole deal couldn't have been better. Just a few changes, connections, and additions could have made this really great. As it is, all those good Mr. C scenes I reference didn't lead anyplace interesting, for example.

That scene where someone took a long time to do something.

hard to say but i think my vote would be for the entire first 15 minutes of episode 3.. i know it's not one scene but it's all presented as one moment, with actions and consequences between two different places and two different characters who in reality are one and the same. so everything from Cooper landing in front of the purple Ocean and meeting Naido to Cooper materializing through the wall socket in the Rancho Rosa apartment. what a fucking sequence of scenes! Phew!!

i'm a visual kind of guy with a big thing for music and sound and this sequence really cranked it up to the max. had the rest of The Return sucked and i had hated it that 15 minutes sequence still would have been worth it. watching it was very much like watching the dream sequence in episode 2 (original run) for the very first time. that sense of being taken in a very unexpected direction that's different from anything else you've seen on the screen

Positively, Bobby crying at the sight of Lauras photo, 25 years after her death is probably the image that comes to mind.
Negatively, green glove kid punching bob-ball. Where the whole thing just turned into a joke.

Funnily enough nothing from Episode 8, which I enjoyed most, has stuck with me at all.
