2017 Best of Lists

Postby richsmith » Tue Dec 05, 2017 1:39 pm

As TP:TR will likely end up on a number of year-end Best Of lists, much to the chagrin of many here, it might be worth having a single thread to place them in.

So far:

Vulture -- #1: http://www.vulture.com/2017/12/best-tv- ... -2017.html

Sight and Sound -- #2: http://www.bfi.org.uk/features/best-films-2017/ (counted as a feature film)

My vote would be in the Profoundly Disappointed thread.

Wow. I bet that'll change many people's minds. Matter of fact, the Profoundly Disappointed will probably abolish their own thread as a consequence of realizing their foolish error...

Also, Metacritic is aggregating the various Best Of lists into one master list. TP:TR is currently #2 overall, behind The Leftovers:

Hats off to Vulture for awarding Peaks both #1 & #2 -- & before I say this, I know the writer was on holidays at the time -- but I can't help but lol that he watched part 8 on his iphone (I would've waited, personally).

The Playlist has it at #1, with probably the perfect line to end the film-vs-TV debate: "Movie, show, novel, tasting menu, designer fragrance or improvisational jazz opus, “Twin Peaks: The Return” was 2017’s best thing."

It looks likely according to the Metacritic poll aggregator to end up runner-up to The Leftovers, another fine show. Still, not bad.

I don't understand how someone could both like "The Leftovers" enough to put it at #1, while not including its spiritual cousin "Twin Peaks" on their list at all.

Bold as it may be, Leftovers is still very "TV." In fact, I think that Leftovers is just about as good as one can make episodic TV, with special focus on how each episode is both self contained and advances the narrative. I've been saying all year long that Leftovers basically perfects the old model, while Twin Peaks tears it down and invents a new one. Twin Peaks is still far too challenging for some, too divisive overall. But then again, some TV critics and awards bodies apparently find Leftovers too challenging. For this reason I think it's remarkable that Peaks is placing on as many TV lists as it is.

And yes, I'm well aware that some critics simply don't like either show and taste is subjective, but overall TV critics do look for certain elements in their medium, and in their own way are just as guilty of not "getting" film as some film critics are condescending when it comes to the medium of television. For my part, I admit to being condescending not towards TV, but towards many TV critics whom I feel are too insulated within their medium, too protective of the advancements it's made over the past two decades without realizing how samey most prestige TV has now become. That, and I simply despise the nature of recap culture, which is not only the enemy of deep thought, but also rarely focuses on anything other than the plot, and where episodes are often judged based primarily on "what" happens rather than "how" it happens (aka, the filmmaking itself).
