Sarah’s smile of darkness

Post by yaxomoxay »

Hi! I might have found who’s the original owner of Sarah’s smile of darkness, as we know it’s not Laura. Conditional is mandatory as I could be completely wrong.
My theory here, some user was very kind to create a gif and a side by side

The teeth don’t look like a match to either Fenn or Lee, to me. Any dental specialists on the board? ;)

The visual definitely brings to mind Laura’s creepy smile from the fan scene in TMP, but I don’t think that’s an exact match either.

Well I guess I view this question the same as the sound from 'listen to the sounds'. An analysis MIGHT yield some important information, but then again, it might not hold any importance whatsoever 'whose' smile it is.

As an aside, that scene was one the most difficult part of The Return for me to get used to. I did not have any issue with Laura pulling off her face in The Lodge, but Sarah pulling her face off in the 'real' world took a while to absorb.

Now that I have gotten used to it, it's one of my favorite scenes in The Return. Maybe not in the top 10, but 11 or 12 at least. It's so very dark and enigmatic- and yeah, I gotta admit, for someone who has bent over his whole life to treat women with respect, so glorious to see that asshole trucker get his neck bitten off.

To be perfectly honest, I never got the impression that the darkened smile was resampled from any of the characters.

That being said, I did find the commentary in that Reddit thread to be thought provoking.

If I was forced to accept the theory that the darkened smile was borrowed from a preexisting symbol/icon, then I’d probably side with the user on Reddit who suggested it was taken from the abstract Lynch painting Between Two Worlds. The title of the painting appears to be an obvious reference to TP, thus reinforcing the idea that they are somehow connected.

That scene with Sarah, (and the scene where Andy is in the White Lodge with Giant/Fireman) is, at the moment, my favorite scene in The Return.

And lastly, I want to say that I was more perplexed by the shadowed hand that reveals the smile. First there’s Sarah’s face, then there’s a Cthulhu-ish looking face/mask that Judy’s shadow hand pulls back, finally revealing the smile in question. So yea, that hand, it’s middle finger is charred black while the other digits appear to be grayish white. What’s the significance of the black middle finger?

All and all, I just settled on the idea that Judy’s natural state is non physical, which may suggest that a shadow incarnation is conceived each time Judy occupies a host. The version we see behind Sarah’s face does not resemble the apparition that appeared in the glass box, nor does it resemble the grey entity that is revealed to Andy by the Fireman.

Maybe the smile beneath Sarah’s face represents Laura’s Doppleganger?

It was the ring finger, not the middle finger — i.e., the “spiritual mound” (whatever that means).

Ah, I just checked and you are correct about it being the ring finger. It’s also a left hand... possibly alluding to the left handed path.

To me, that hand implies the presence of someone who met their fate while wearing the ring.

Maybe Judy/Laura are contradicting manifestations of the same entity? Perhaps a doppelgänger was conceived when Laura placed the ring on her hand at the end of FWWM.

Meh, sometimes it’s good to leave certain stones unturned.

While that animated gif does look like a close match, the still used of Fenn is stretched, so it is certainly not a direct frame match.

The theme of the image, yeah. It’s an older work from Lynch. However, the actual image on the url you posted looks different (the teeth are not the same).
