Nevins has said more than once that TP moved serious subscriptions for them. He said it all through last year.

I haven't really thought that the Showtime part of the equation was an issue. Certainly they wouldn't turn down a new season, even if it may not have been the success they hoped. Showtime saying anything positive about it doesn't amount to anything. It's only about whether the creators ever had any intention of more, or would want to. My issue/anxiety, and I would hope it would be shared by most fans, is that it has to be the same set-up with Lynch directing it all; you can't go backwards. A smaller thing of 8-10 hours would be preferable and more likely.

I thought I remembered reading that the spike didn’t last after the show ended, but I think I’m misremembering (or remembering speculation rather than actual facts). In any event, I still hold to my contention that the show was by most coventional analyses at best a very modest success, and I’m personally glad that it didn’t reach the level of a Homeland or Shameless. I think we’re in an ideal place for renewal and another season free of executive interference, whenever L/F want it.

I think most of us can agree we'd like a shorter season. I'm good with 10-13, though 13 is a rarity now on premium cable.

It's really hard to tell; these companies tend to keep these numbers close to the vest and only selectively release what they want the public/their investors to know.

I am just glad we are even having this debate how successful Season 3 was, not whether or not it was successful. A lot of naysayers still point to the Nielsen ratings to say Season 3 was a complete flop, and I must admit the low Nielsen's did get me down for a while. I had this vain, unrealistic hope we were going to beat Game of Thrones at the ratings :-).

Yes, I concur. I"d even be up for a 3-4 hour highly focused film, a great follow up to FWWM.

A film would be great, and it would make me happier in some ways, since we'd get it sooner.

We’re all eagerly anticipating your next feature film, and it’s been eight years since Inland Empire. And your pal Laura Dern recently said you were “cooking up” your next one. How’s that coming along?

Laura… she loves to talk, and she loves to work, so you can’t really go by what she says! [Laughs] I’m really loving painting these days. So there’s nothin’ on the burner right now.

Here he again says that he into painting now a days

The best thing you can do in your life is get an HD projector and paint a wall of your house white/hang a sheet/buy a cheap office screen. Use headphones instead of a sound system to save money. Your friends and family may not agree!

Back in the day, I actually built a cheap projector by taking the back off a flat screen monitor that was being thrown out, buying a cheap overhead projector from ebay, then putting the monitor on that. It was crazy to get working sometimes, was clearly going to kill me by electrocution one day, and was a pain to move around, but I had many happy hours with that thing. Having caught the bug, I bought a proper projector when I could afford it.

In fact, anyone in Australia is welcome to PM me, since I'm planning a "18 hour S3 in one day" experience with some friends later in the year when we are all less busy. Anyone is welcome to join us!

I'm with those who believe that we have seen the end of Twin Peaks. No Season 4.

The final episode doesn't feel like a cliffhanger to me. I think the questions that it leaves us with are questions that we're meant to puzzle over afterward for the rest of our lives.

I mean, yeesh, it explicitly erases the past. There are no dangling story threads to follow. Laura Palmer was never murdered. Cooper changed that and now everything is different.

Alternate timelines? I guess a science-fiction writer with a long-term vision for stories years in the future might be interested in that, but Lynch doesn't strike me as the type. Lynch's favorite logic is dream logic. He likes mystery for its own sake. He doesn't care if everything makes perfect sense. His favorite kind of puzzle is one that can never be completed.

I think that Lynch thinks it's beautiful that we'll never know what horrible secret that Laura whispered into Cooper's ear (it's not "my father killed me" anymore).

It's gonna take one motherfucker of an idea to top that. And Lynch is leaving that possibility open. Maybe that amazing idea will hit him next Wednesday.

But I don't think that Season 3 was made with any plans for a follow-up.

They threw out the kitchen sink with this one.
