How an American TV show influenced Ocarina of Time

Postby JumpWithSigma&Phi » Mon Nov 02, 2015 3:12 pm

And it wasn't any tv show, it was nothing less than Twin Peaks!

Have you ever heard of Twin Peaks? It was a show that aired in America in 1990 and ended after a second season in 1991. Now… why the heck am I talking about this? Well, according to Shigeru Miyamoto, it influenced the way he handled characters in Zelda: Ocarina of Time.

How couldn't I know that? No I need to go and buy that game and play it again! For those who don't know what Ocarina of Time is, it was a great game from Nintendo:

Initially developed for the Nintendo 64 then for the Game Cube, it has been released for the Nintendo 3ds a few years ago.

And it appear that our beloved show inspired another game in the series, The Legend of Zelda Link Awakening:

It’s not as outlandish as it sounds. People who weren’t around for Twin Peaks might have a hard time imagining just what a big deal the show was, at least for its first half. And I’ve heard before that it was even bigger in Japan. The actors from the show even appeared in character in TV ads for coffee.

Twin Peaks was big in Japan, and really it didn't just influence Ocarina of Time, but really it deeply influenced the way the Zelda developers approach character and dialogue in general. The influence can still be felt to this day.
