Re: "Do your palms ever itch?" All things Audrey
While we wait for Audrey Horne's next entry here's some crap I've thrown together against a wall hoping some might stick. (Sorry Audrey not to have given much in response to your last entry, I guess you said everything that really needed to be said, but it was a pleasure to read.)
Okay, we all know that some kind of 'romance' had long been planned between Audrey and Cooper. What form it would've taken - physical, spiritual, educational - we'll never know now, as person(s) (un)known f***ed everything up. The signs were there, in the initial scripts at least, during the One-Eyed Jacks arc that Cooper wasn't being entirely straight with himself, or Truman, when Harry asked if things weren't getting 'a little too personal.' In the end, virtually all that's left is Cooper telling Nancy to "shut up" - one of the few occasions where Cooper loses control of his emotions, something I'd liked to have seen a little more of, he is human after all. So what else was in the original scripts?
As I stated previously there were two scenes from 2.02 - Cooper's 'evident concern' overhearing Ben's conversation to Harry and the extended 'content of her smile' speech.
In 2.04 where Ben shows Cooper the ransom tape we have:
Ben turns to the small television, presses PLAY. Audrey's image appears on the screen. Cooper stares at the screen with evident emotion. Ben's got him right where he wants him followed by Ben's 'special relationship' speech. The scene ends with:
HOLD ON Cooper for a beat. Starring at Audrey, helpless on the video screen.
In 2.05 there was a nice sentence dropped from Cooper's opening scene:
Diane, a strange dream to report: I dreamt I was
eating a large, tasteless gumdrop. I soon awoke to
realize I was aggressively munching on one of my
Air-Pillow Silicon Ear Plugs. Hence the
tastelessness. I suspect some unexpressed feeling of
aggression is responsible.
Unexpressed feeling of aggression? I'll say there is. From Audrey's rescue:
COOPER (coldly determined) Please take me to Audrey Horne. Now.
NANCY (figuring her options) I don't think she's available.
Cooper takes out his pistol.
COOPER Let's double check.
A little more intense than the filmed armlock. Also:
Cooper sees Audrey, dazed, bound up on the bed. He gives Nancy a quick stare: of controlled rage.
COOPER (quiet, intense) Audrey, I'm going to take you out of here now.
Cooper hears the sound of brushing silk. He reacts, turns in time to SEE Nancy take a stiletto out of her boot. Her hand sweeps forward, blade flashing. Cooper shifts to avoid. But the steel catches his arm, rips and tears. Cooper grabs Nancy's wrist with his free hand, wrenches the knife from her grasp, sends her sprawling with a punch to the jaw. She's out cold.
Punch to the jaw? Show her who's boss, Coop. All we ended up with was that weak punch to her stomach.
From the bookhouse scene in 2.06, most of the dialogue removed:
Cooper gently lifts her left arm - every time he touches her it is with great care and precision...
Cooper watches, helpless, uncertain. Then, urgent, emphatic:
COOPER I want you to talk to me. Audrey, Please.
There's a faint note of desperation in his voice...
Cooper gently gathers Audrey into his arms...
Cooper gently places a hand upon her cheek, offers a healing caress...
**As a sidenote, I've always wondered if Audrey's heroin-induced ramble meant anything, or whether it was just a ramble!
AUDREY His tongue, so heavy ... a hand in my throat ... it hurts me, Oh God it hurts ... (she shivers uncontrollably) Black cold, the lake, black cold ... can't breathe ... help me, please help me ... I'm sinking ...
Seeing Laura's death? Maybe not. Wasn't Laura already dead when Leland threw her in the river?**
Talking of rambling...does any of the above prove anything? Maybe. Maybe not. I just like to ramble occasionally...
