In fact, I would say if you're in the camp that is concerned about Windom Earle you are going to hate The Return.

TNX. A bummer (for me). Still, there's 14 parts yet...Soolsma wrote:Earle > None whatsoever.

Re: Parts 3 + 4 (Spoilers)
Yeah, watching the opening to E3 I just couldn't believe someone paid for this or was actually letting it be broadcast. Mad. But I'm glad it slipped through - I doubt Lynch will get another opportunity!garethw wrote:I appreciate your choice of words here, Reindeer.Mr. Reindeer wrote: Ultimately, I love that DKL is doing his own damned thing, and whatever this ends up being, I'm convinced based on what I've seen that I'll love it, as messy as it may end up being.
My wife asked me how I liked it, and I reported that, "It's probably fair to call it a self-indulgent mess, but I really, really liked it."
I can't really believe that someone put Lynch in full creative control of tens of millions of dollars, but I'm damn glad they did.

Don't understand how anyone could mistake this classic for Badalamenti. As much as I love that track, I don't understand why a new piece by Angelo wasn't used.Metamorphia wrote:Ha, that's Take Five by Dave Bruebeck!Mr. Reindeer wrote: .and a phenomenal new Badalamenti piece to accompany the proceedings!

Re: Parts 3 + 4 (Spoilers)
Yeah, I think Angelo's apparent absence is one of the most perplexing things so far. He's prominently featured in the title credits, but it's all old work. Maybe we're in a certain "phase" of the full piece right now, and that as we move on to new phases, new work will show up. One can hope.ringbearer wrote:Don't understand how anyone could mistake this classic for Badalamenti. Re: Parts 3 + 4 (Spoilers)
Lynch and Badalamenti have worked often with drones and minimalist noisy soundscapes. It's just not the melodic, jazzy, song-based Angelo we're getting so far. It's more "experimental electronics" that blend in Lynch's global sound design. It's a return in a way to the sort of soundtrack Lynch had developed for Eraserhead (which is still highly regarded as music by people who are into abstract electronics and scapes).garethw wrote:Yeah, I think Angelo's apparent absence is one of the most perplexing things so far. Hmm. I guess I can't separate what was (Lynch's) soundscape and what was (Angelo's) "experimental electronics". I just assumed everything we're hearing is Lynch. I really like the sound design, and I'm glad I watched with headphones.Dom834 wrote:Lynch and Badalamenti have worked often with drones and minimalist noisy soundscapes. Re: Parts 3 + 4 (Spoilers)
I loved the use of Take Five with Cooper slowly getting his mojo back... Orange juice, stack of griddle cakes and HOT coffee.
I now actually love the Wally scene... That's a "lovely turn of phrase." And his obsession with Marlon Brando. I loved the family photo is a composite of photo shopped old heads of Kimmi and Goaz, and I think of a young adult Cera head on a child body.
Gordon's glance at dead roses... Of course could recall Blue Rose, but more importantly that they were used by a previous FBIer to butter up Denise and she couldn't care less.
Split Cooper, and also split Truman, or Truman doubled... Nice.
I let everything wash over me, but it's impossible not to analyze or critique on first viewing... And then truly appreciate it more and more.
"Do you know where she lives?" "I know where she drinks." I think we're down to three possibilities... Diane, Audrey or Annie. my bet is Diane.

God, I love this music. Isn't it too dreamy?
Re: Parts 3 + 4 (Spoilers)
Still sleep-deprived from Episodes 1 & 2 last night. Just finished watching Episode 3.
Initial impressions.
Opening scene - amazing.
First impression - is that first woman Josie? Meant to represent Josie? Probably not. Stunning scene. Loved all of it. And - oh wow - look, it's Ronette!
(Is Phoebe Augustine even credited or credited as someone else? Going to have to check that.)
Dream like, purple sea, stars, big floating weird face - all wonderful.
Love the Sheriff's Station scene with Lucy, Hawk, and Andy. Maybe the humour is a little stupid, or a little bit OTT, but I loved it. And - look - a throwback to the choc bunnies! This is finally starting to feel like "Twin Peaks" (at least in part).
- Loved the donut sign!
But much of the rest of it still feels like "Mulholland Drive - The Series".
Dougie scenes - funny, for the most part. Kyle does a beautiful job with them.
What is Dougie? Some sort of replica made by a lodge spirit for the real world? A doppel-replica? Weird, but I'm on board whatever it/he is.
Oh - look. The FWWM ring is back. Was sure that storyline wouldn't be picked back up. And the One Armed man is putting it back on the familiar-looking table. Very cool!
LOVED the casino scene. Kyle is doing a wonderful job with these roles. This scene has a real warmth and tenderness to it and it's very funny and sweet, but also kind of strange and cool - especially with the red room curtains appearing, almost like an icon from a video game, leading him along.
I've warmed to the new red room and the FX completely. I still wish it was the old, eerier-looking red room, but the new one is starting to fit the vibe of THIS series.
- The FX no longer looks as bad/disconcerting as it did in the first two episodes on first watch. Now it does look intentional, at times hokey, but also beautiful - the stars in the beginning, the purplish sea, etc. It's starting to look/feel like a painting at times. Really like a DKL art installation show or something.
Jacoby and the shovels - very cool. Like the Sheriff's Station scene, got a vibe of the old "TP", though in a more hinted at/disconnected way. (Also a bit of a vibe of "LOST" and "The Tommyknockers"). Expected Johnny Horne to appear here in this scene!
Albert and Cole are back! Wow wow wow wow. Love it.
Final scene at the roadhouse is cool but a bit annoying. I don't mind every episode finishing here, with a new band. In fact, it gives a nice sense of consistency to break up each episode - or "part", as David Lynch prefers - but wish there had at least been a brief scene here with characters as well. It feels a bit too disconnected just to switch to the music. Should have had a little dialogue, or glimpse of some characters, for the narrative.
Overall impressions - this is the episode I feel where people will begin to warm to this new and very different "TP". By now, we're starting to get used to the world. Yes, I still wish more was set in "TP", yes I still wish it had been more what I had hoped it would be (a direct continuation of Season 2), yes I could do without some of the new world characters and scenes, and yes some of it feels a bit too like "MH" or even "IE" at times (and echoes of "Lost Highway" and "Eraserhead")- but by now I'm almost comfortable knowing this will never be the continuation/revival I personally had hoped for and am enjoying it for what it is - a pure David Lynch ride, almost like a "best of" album. There's echoes of all his work here.
- Maybe it should have been called "The David Lynch Show"?
Once I've gotten some sleep and rewatched all the episodes, I'll probably have more constructive/analytical things to say!
Not sure if I'm going to dive right into Episode 4 or take a break. Not going to read through this thread and all your comments until I've seen 4.

I have no idea where this will lead us, but I have a definite feeling it will be a place both wonderful and strange.

I'd just like to say that I love it. That whole sequence at the beginning of episode 3 had me grinning from ear to ear...that's the kind of Lynchian madness I adore. Also, the whole bit with cooper walking around in the casino was hilarious....and I enjoyed that weird tree thing in the red room. Pure Lynch.

I hope that wasn't really poor Ronette in there, but I have to assume it is, credits or not. I hope we see her again, but I doubt it.

So Dougie has the same particular zest for life that Leland did.
Interesting.
Interesting.

One other thing, Bobby's probably a dirty cop right? Are we just supposed to take him at face value when he tells New Truman that he has no idea how the drugs are making it into town?
