Rivette was another comparison I think we could make to the mode Lynch is working in here, with Tati and Buster Keaton etc.

I've only read to page 12 but let me be the first to my knowledge to say I WILL MISS BABY COOP WHEN HE'S GONE.

When you call her that, it reminds me that Argent's 2nd album ALSO has a familiar symbol:

She's not a very compelling character, and neither is the sheriff for that matter. Compared to the charismatic Harry Truman, the new character seems passive and aimless. That may still change as the show goes on, of course, but that's how it feels so far.

I have to say, while I'm loving the show, Forster feels a bit underutilized. It's very early in the game still, but all he's been given to do so far is deadpan reaction shots. The sheriff's station stuff overall has been by far my least favorite (Hawk aside). Forster is a terrific actor (he managed to pop up as a surprise guest star im the penultimate Breaking Bar episode and completely steal the show), and I really hope he gets some meaty material. (Which I assume he will, given his sick brother and tragic backstory.)

I agree, except for Hawk, who's been terrific, the Sheriff station scenes have been my least favorite scenes of the show so far.

However, I did really like the Doris scenes on the second watch and I bet I will like them more on subsequent watches. I even heard someone say Doris has borderline personality disorder, and I know one or two people in my life in that category, so maybe that is why I find those scenes so effective.

I think he needs to be found by someone who knew him, and be shown who he is again. Or, Windom Earle disguised as the Log Lady will drop a sandbag on his head from a great height. :P
I really hope it's not the sandbag on the head like the way Nadine woke up from her teenage regression. Given that he responds to "coffee" and "case files", perhaps you are right. He needs to reconnect with people who mattered to him in the past: Gordon Cole, Albert, Annie, Caroline (obviously dead, but mention of her could trigger something), Diane, etc...

Nighthawk wrote: An open question is where does his supernatural intuition come from. Is he to some extent controlled by Mike? Is it an ability he always had? In the original series, Cooper resorted to unorthodox investigative techniques, and his instincts rarely failed. Perhaps we are seeing a refined version of gifts/talents he has always possessed. They may also have been enhanced by his prolonged stay in the Black Lodge.
I posted this in the ep3+4 thread: I kept thinking about Cooper's (and the show's) themes of of instinct and intuition (remembering the old Tibet/throwing stones at glass bottle scene, coop and Major Briggs's 'hardware' etc). Episode 4 seems to tighten up the connection between this and the operations of the lodge(s). Coop in the casino seems to be operating on pure instinct, completely unclouded by self-awareness. In no time at all, he just so happens to end up surviving attempts on his life, and win a vast amount of money, which later is revealed to pay off debts (which also looked to threaten his life). There seem to be forces guiding him... everyone he encountered did exactly what they needed to do not to help him get to a doctor, but to help him along this specific path, the exact circumstances that would save his life.
Perhaps Cooper is guided or can be guided because he is one of the "gifted" or the "damned" (pick one) like TOAM implied, during season 2, was a prerequisite to see Bob's true face, and presumably any of the other Lodge spirits. It seems that Cooper had certain abilities all along, although they were partially hidden by the fact that he was an excellent FBI agent in a conventional sense as well. Right now he is a shell of a man, in fact inhabiting another man's body in sort of a Lodge spirit fashion. I wish the show would resolve this plot point sooner rather than later. I do want to see the old agent Cooper, maybe not as he once was, but not a catatonic marionette either.

I also like Doris. Clark is killing it -- sad and funny. I definitely understand why others don't like it tho'. Comedy is so subjective.

I believe he does a *lot* of theater. One of my professors was classmates with him in college. Said that Strobel starred in some amazing Shakespeare productions.
He really is fantastic in both old Twin Peaks and the new. Not to mention, I'm pretty sure that he is the only one in the show that I wouldn't need subtitles for during the red room scenes. His backwards speak is great!

You know, I was one of those that felt Doris and Janey-E were written as stereotypical nagging wife caricature's than actual characters, but this past episode I felt fleshed them both out.

Yeah, fully agreed. I wasn't so sure about either of them until Part 5 but the last one really changed the way I see them. Tamara's scene in Part 5 did the same thing as well.
This is - excuse me - a damn fine cup of coffee.

In general I'm really liking the new series. Having said that, we are a third of the way through and some issues are starting to creep in for me. There's a coldness to the show that is starting to bother me. I'm interested in much of what is going on, but it seems like a series of set pieces designed to create a mood then quickly move on. I realize there is more at play and we seeing pieces of a puzzle, but where are the personal interactions? I keep thinking of that great scene between Donna and James in the Pilot at night when they realize their feelings for each other. Even the scene between Becky and Shelly we can barely hear!

I never thought I'd say it but yes, I'm craving some wistful interactions between Big Ed (remember him?) and Norma! Bring it on and please Dougie/Coop wake the fuck up.

Hear hear!
I have no idea where this will lead us, but I have a definite feeling it will be a place both wonderful and strange.
