Well, it was news footage being captured. That's why it was shot handheld and using wide angle lenses. In Episode 10 you see a news segment created with those very same shots!

wasn't the news footage in Episode 9 different takes with different dialouge?

I thought that Janey-E's dialogue seemed different, and I wrote it off as her having spoken to multiple news crews. There would almost certainly be multiple news crews present at the scene, so it's not an especially tortured explanation.

Can someone explain to me (or link to me a thorough breakdown) of what Cole is signaling when he is counting Preston's fingers? I know it has something to do with the backwards spelling of the word "very," but I just can't quite put my finger on it.

I think he's counting the words DoppelCoop spoke when he greeted Gordon, one per finger. The word that he spoke backwards (Lodge-speak glitch?) lands on the left ring finger, which is the finger where Mr. C's print is reversed....and also (I think?) where Dougie wore the Owl Cave ring, but Gordon isn't aware of that.

Re watched this one the other day and I must say, I feel that there's no way Diane is on Dopplecoop's side. The terror she experienced when talking to him in the prison felt so very real that I would be shocked if it was an act. Now, could Dopplecoop be blackmailing her into helping him? Perhaps. Whatever's going on with Diane right now is the most fascinating mystery for me right now.

Just watched a video interview with production designer Jack Fisk about Mulholland Dr. At the very end, he's talking about how hands-on Lynch is on the set. He mentions arriving on the set for The Straight Story to find Lynch sweeping the street. He says that at one point in his life Lynch was a "professional sweeper" and that he's really good at it! Sweeping scene explained?!
