Most reasonable explanation in the entire thread. Bravo! 8)

In Part 11, in a scene suggested to be in advance of many of the scenes in Part 13, the police officer says he'd just been at Big Ed's Gas farm. Why was he out there? Could be interesting...

Novalis wrote:As I've said before in this thread, whether it's motivated or not doesn't really matter to me -- whether it is an intentionally representative and diegetic phenomenon or an accident of editing, it still signifies when it comes to talking about The Return as a whole, including the way it is directed and produced (and not just in terms of its story).

My personal feeling is that if it is a genuine error of some kind, then someone on the production team would have spotted it. It was glaringly obvious to me, at 3am, and I wasn't looking out for bad editing. I feel that if it was left in after that point, particularly if this decision was sanctioned by the director, then it holds more significance. It wouldn't be the first time non-diegetic material crept into an edit and was then, through ad-hoc creativity, incorporated into the diegetic.

If that is indeed the case, it would be no surprise. Such serendipitous accidents forms part of Lynch's creative methodology (and in his worldview there appear to be no such things as pure contingencies -- no accidents as such, just the interlocking intricacies of karma), just as chance plays a large part in Dadaism.

"E.g." means "for example". What I think you want to say is "i.e.".

Nope. The entire background, including Ed, does not exhibit any glitch. It is limited to the window reflection only. Trust me on that.
Yes it's there, my friend... There's a change between two different layers on the entire background. I replayed the moment over and over last night. Big TV, best quality as possible. Trust me.

Do you have any visual evidence of that?

Whew, I believe I'm the only one on these boards who's ever been accused of being arrogant, but I think the above exchange shows us there are plenty of people who are absolutely sure what they believe is right and that anyone who thinks differently is an idiot.

Who would actually stop at Ed's to get gas? It looks like the pumps don't even have credit card readers! He only takes cash for repairs, it seems. Does he also require cash to fill up? In any normal town, I think Big Ed would have been out of business a long time ago.

Why do you quote me and the other person, and then you say that a disagreement means that we think of each other as an "idiot"? Nobody said that besides you.

Exactly.

Maybe Sewhite2000 wrongly saw his own "reflection" over our comments ;)

I'd like to point out that I was indeed moved to sadness and sympathy over how Big Ed was obviously feeling; the emotional content of that scene was not lost on me.

so which was all of your favorite scene from this latest episode?

having had a week to reflect on it (and one rewatch) i think my favorite overall is the Sonny Jim in 7th Heaven (or as Cooper repeats it back, "Seven heaven" - a clue, as in ??????? Heaven perhaps?). very strong scene with a perfect Lynchian atmosphere, complete with the eerie yet beautiful rendition of the Swan Lake song produced by either Lynch, Badalamenti or Hurley. the image of Sonny Jim having the time of his life while that spotlight searches for him and Janey-E and Dougie watches him as the proud parents they are (haha)

overall, the consensus seems to be that episode 13 was a slamdunk while 12 was a dissapointment.. i personally think 12 was a really strong part that demanded at least one rewatch while this part felt a little stale at times. in about 12 hours i will once again be in 7 Heaven!

The conga line at Lucky 7 insurance. Honestly, I enjoy this Las Vegas plotline so much that I just got overjoyed when it opened with the statue.

I thought 12 was a weak part that improved with each rewatch (I rewatched it once, then rewatched it with a friend last Saturday) and that this was a very strong one. It seems like since Ep 9 we've been alternating good and bad feelings on the evens and odds. But while I've avoided spoilers, I keep seeing positive statements from the Germans about 14 so maybe the pattern's broken.
