The thing that most annoyed me watching S2...

Post by tj o'pootertoot »

...is that the whole fact that a chunk of the cast are teenagers got lost in the shuffle.

Since Laura was killed in late Feb S2 seems to be March/April and yet NONE of the "kids" go to high school. Shelly dropped out, so that's fine. But Bobby gets a "job" with Ben, as does Audrey. James goes for his little bike adventure and Donna does her thing.

It's not that the show has to be (or was) "realistic" but it kinda ruins a big part of who those characters should be, IMHO.

I agree 100 percent. It doesn't make any sense, and to add insult to injury Nadine is the only one we ever see in school in the second season!

My pet peeve about the second season (even more than the school thing) is whatever happened to the people employed at the mill?

Wouldn't you think that the mill fire would hit people really hard in such a small community? Pete is out of a job, but he doesn't even mention it once. The Pulaski family - I assume Janek is out of a job too - sure as hell wouldn't survive on Ronette's income from the perfume counter. We don't even know if she's back to work, or if she even worked there anymore. I was interested in Ronette's story, but she just disappears from the show altogether.

Not everyone can be lawyers, hotel owners, doctors, waitresses or in the police. I would think the mill fire would have the power to completely stun a community and maybe even make it into a ghost town if some other big employer doesn't come around.

I like a lot of the mystery plotting in the second season. The Windom Earle plot - while somewhat poorly and heavyhandedly executed - showed some real potential, and up to episode 14 most was great. And I love Mike. But they forgot - even before ep. 14 - that the series was supposed to be more than just a mystery. In a soap opera you need a somewhat stable environment like a school or a factory/mill/other large employer, and forgetting that was a huge mistake.

In my opinion, of course.

I'm glad we didnt see more high school stuff, its generally boring to watch, theyre either in class getting a lecture or gossiping about rubbish. The last thing twin peaks needed is even more characters running around too.
Like DonnaNotYou I and a fair number of my friends rarely attended the final year to be honest, and just go in to socialise when we did.

They were shown in high school only a couple of times -and only ONE class room scene -which is brilliant and exquisite (the home room scene in the pilot) -the other high school scene was the classic bathroom scene with Audrey and Donna.

I guess we had a bunch of crappy Nadine scenes in season two -and boring Donna at the locker with her -but that had much more to do with the plot than the location.
God, I love this music. Isn't it too dreamy?

My feeling wasn't so much that we need more high school scenes. Not at all.

Rather it struck me that it made no sense for Bobby Briggs (a high school student and varsity athlete) to be pursuing a job with Ben Horne during school hours. Ditto for Audrey doing the same and James going on his motor trip and several other things.

It's not that the show has to be REALISITIC but to set these people up as high school students and then entirely ignore that when you have an amusing plot line you'd like to take them on simply does not make sense. It would be just as weird if Hawk showed up one day and said he was going on a road trip with the Seattle Mariners, completely disposing of his established character as a deputy.

That's my opinion, anyway...

That is what FWWM is about by the way. BOB is not a "spirit." Although I think it's possible the Twin Peaks writers may have varying opinions about this subject, Lynch made it quite clear with FWWM that he did NOT think Leland was "possessed" by anyone or anything, except maybe the corruption of his own soul. And in my opinion, Lynch's truth is the only truth when it comes to Twin Peaks. True, there were certain collaborations, & Lynch did not write every word of dialogue or every small side story, but we all know the real meat of Twin Peaks is completely Lynch's creation.
I completely disagree. There is MUCH evidence in the series (which is the true canon, by the way) that Bob is a spirit from the Black Lodge, and that all of the supernatural elements in TP must exist. What else would Cooper, Earle, or Briggs have been experiencing with their journeys to the Lodges?

And I COMPLETELY disagree with your standpoint on Lynch. If anything, Mark Frost was the true face behind TP, as he edited every script, and wrote many episodes (including co-writing all of the ones Lynch did). And Harley Peyton wrote more episodes than anyone else. They are the minds behind TP, and they stayed with it even when Lynch abandoned it.

Inconsistencies with Fire Walk With Me do not alter the truth of the show. To say Leland actually raped Laura without being possessed by Bob is like saying that all Stormtroopers are clones and that medichlorians are what causes The Force, just because Lucas' Star Wars prequels say so despite there being no evidence of it in the originals.

Obviously, you are free to have your own theories and opinions, that is the fun of the show, but I find it very callus and disrespectful to so dramatically undermine Frost, Engels, and Peyton's importance behind the show.
Sometimes things can happen just like this. *snap*
