I acquired a copy and it was an interesting oddity. By no means did it lessen my appreciation of the film.

TBH,I'd rather see a list of changes.....than the actual pilot.

I have a vivid imagination... ..that will suffice.

I stumbled onto this thread by accident, having sleepily opened the wrong forum. My wife is a big fan of MD, so we watch it a couple of times a year.
TV series are such a different medium than movies. TP was, briefly, interesting, but not a really good series in the way that , say, Lost, is on network, broadcast TV , still less what Carnivale, Sopranos, Deadwood,... were on Cable.
Maybe Cable would be the best of all worlds for DL?
The one guy I know about who has worked successfully in broadcast series tv as well as the Big Screen, is David Mamet. If yuns ain't familiar with his work ( everything's new to someone, right?),I'd suggest Glengarry Glennross, Red Belt, Spartan, State and Main.

I don't think it's fair to compare Twin Peaks with the later shows like Lost and simply state that TP is weaker. I'm a complete outsider to your broadcasting system, but I believe during the years between TP and Lost, TV series have evolved into a different beast. The production process has changed, the audiences themselves have changed. I'm a big Lost fan but honestly I think by today's standards its flaws are much more obvious than those of TP did back in the old days. And that's why I love TP way more than things like Lost.

Speaking of David Mamet, his "On Directing Film" is still one of the best cinema books ever written to me. It's simple and straight to the points, while few others are like that.

Back to the MD Pilot. I haven't seen it and John's words pretty much restrained my eager to see it. But any MD fan would be curious to check out the stuff that ended up on the cutting floor. Gotta find a torrent!

I watched the MD pilot for the first time recently and, although it may have just been temp music, I couldn't help but notice the use of "Take Five" in some of the Adam Kesher scenes. Lynch had that one in his backpocket for a long time :)

For those interested, the actors credited as the main cast—i.e., presumably those Lynch intended as series regulars—are Justin Theroux (Adam), Naomi Watts (Betty), Laura Harring (Rita), Ann Miller (Coco), Brent Briscoe (Det. Domgaard), Scott Coffey (Wilkins, owner of the dog that craps in the yard...he has a scene in the pilot revealing that he’s Adam’s friend, which was cut from the film, where he only appears at the dinner party in footage for the feature), and Katharine Towne (Adam’s assistant Cynthia! I’ve always thought she was really good in the little screen time she had). Guest stars in the opening credits are Dan Hedaya (Vincenzo Castigliane) and Robert Forster (Det. McKnight).

Someone awhile ago mentioned wanting a list of the differences. There’s a terrific resource here which has been online basically since the film came out: https://www.mulholland-drive.net/studies/pilot.htm

That whole website is well worth checking out.

All the deleted Forster/Briscoe stuff is of course gold. The deleted scene on the Criterion Blu Ray is hilarious, but there’s also a great moment in the pilot cut when we first see them at the scene of the crash. Forster asks simply: “Ya feel it?” And Briscoe responds, “Yeah.” Man, I wish that was in the film!

I remember when it was offline! I retrieved it through the Wayback Machine and copied a few pages (such as the “pilot differences” page and the locations guide) into Word docs just in case they were to fully disappear from the web. Glad it’s back too!
