Season 3 just started.
Re: Twin Peaks Return: The Profoundly Disappointed Support Group (SPOILERS)
As much as I haven't "gotten" the Dougie scenes, I honestly would have preferred an entire season of that shit over what they pulled this week. At least then I could have rewatched it and tried to pull some meaning out of it all somehow. But just suddenly snapping out of it like that completely invalidates everything else stooper cooper did this season! He woke up randomly for no reason, so why did it have to take 16 episodes?? Cooper could have been trapped in the black lodge this whole time! The plot would have been in the same place now and at least we'd have gotten some extra surrealism rather than boring Los Vegas scenes with characters no one cares about! Or, he could have been in Las Vegas slowly waking up. I'd have taken that too! Just not this "16 episodes of literally nothing of value and now in one episode he's better!" bullshit.
I feel like the girl in the bar from last episode!

My roommate and I both tried as hard as we could and couldn't feel anything for either of them during that same scene. Obviously some might, but Lynch never developed their characters or gave us any reason to connect with them, so I'm assuming the vast majority in this thread didn't.
Re: Twin Peaks Return: The Profoundly Disappointed Support Group (SPOILERS)
Well, the fact that you didn't connect with the characters is all within the normal reactions to a piece of art. I bet that some people here were happy about tonight's episode.Candie wrote:http://www.dictionary.com/browse/hyperboleyaxomoxay wrote:Candie wrote:As much as I haven't "gotten" the Dougie scenes, I honestly would have preferred an entire season of that shit over what they pulled this week. Re: Twin Peaks Return: The Profoundly Disappointed Support Group (SPOILERS)
I sure didn't. For me at least it was a simulacrum of a dramatic scene, but then few of these Vegas characters have ever done much for me.
Re: Twin Peaks Return: The Profoundly Disappointed Support Group (SPOILERS)
My complaint isn't really about whether I connected with them or not. My complaint tonight is in the fact that putting him in a 30 second coma and having him wake up "good as new" is a cheap tactic straight out of bad writing 101. If he could have randomly woken up at any point (rather than slowly, or in response to something that couldn't have happened earlier) it makes all the stagnant scenes totally meaningless. Those scenes didn't accomplish anything. Back then I was waiting for the big payoff that would make those scenes worth something, but now that he woke up in this way, that's gone right out the window.yaxomoxay wrote:Well, the fact that you didn't connect with the characters is all within the normal reactions to a piece of art. The LV scenes did nothing to move the plot forward or develop any characters. Why didn't he just stick a fork in the socket 10 episodes ago or earlier? There was nothing stopping him.
Re: Twin Peaks Return: The Profoundly Disappointed Support Group (SPOILERS)
Not really. Cheap writing would be "Cooper in the lodge, snaps out, has to learn new world, solved mystery" which is something we all somehow imagined a few months ago (at different levels). If six months ago I told you 1/10 of what we know now you would've called me a liar (independently on your taste).Candie wrote:My complaint isn't really about whether I connected with them or not. I feel that L/F did something different while at the same time avoided cliches. We avoided a continuous stream of learning how to use the smartphone, updates etc. and we traded in for Dougie a much more simpler being that fed love. Dougie was love all around. And he fed on love too, learned about the world through observation like a small kid. His voyage was unique.
His awakening was not sudden at all. It took him several experiences to find his own self, but it has to be triggered. Ronette Polanski in S1 was a cliche, wakes up of a coma suddenly and for no reason. In this case? Cooper has to be Dougie and yes, he needed an electrical shock on top of everything else.

Re: Twin Peaks Return: The Profoundly Disappointed Support Group (SPOILERS)
Lynch and Frost clearly thought the Dougie stuff was inherently interesting and worth doing, not just a plot development for the real Cooper. Incidentally one of Lynch's favorite films is M. Houlot's Holiday which I couldn't get into at all. It's a bunch of random scenes with no plot. There's at least a little similarity to Dougie's thing.Candie wrote:My complaint isn't really about whether I connected with them or not. Oh, what we're watching isn't cliche? Which is why there's an entire TV Tropes page about it? http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/EasyAmnesiayaxomoxay wrote:Not really. EDIT: Not that it matters much, but the alternative you're describing sounds equally dumb, and is far from the only one. I'm picturing 16 episodes of Cooper still trapped in the lodge going on weird psychedelic adventures across various dimensions. That would have been so much more fun.
Re: Twin Peaks Return: The Profoundly Disappointed Support Group (SPOILERS)
I liked Coop and his family at the casino, even if the entire show is mainly bullshit to me, I found this scene moving.
Mr C scene was ok, but I expected much more from the father and son's reunion. Liked Badalamenti's score in this episode, discreet and more Mulholland Drive than TP but nice. Diane' scenes were painful, a boring monologue followed by a very crappy FX scene (even more ridiculous than the Dougie one in ep 3). Laura Dern deserve a rasberry award for her awful character. And finally Audrey's scene... just embarrassing.
One more week and we are FREE!

I liked the effect of Diane flying across the room after she was shot, but I saw her pulling the gun out and getting shot the second she walked in the door, and I predicted the stale rape plot the second her character was introduced.Aqwell wrote:I liked Coop and his family at the casino, even if the entire show is mainly bullshit to me, I found this scene moving.

I know it seems off to complain about a rape plot in Twin Peaks, a show canonically all about rape, but when Diane was first introduced I remember saying, "if this turns out to be another dumb rape plot I'm going to scream". It's so canned and tired. I'm so done with rape being used as a plot device, especially since Lynch and Frost proved they could write against that mold in FWWM
Re: Twin Peaks Return: The Profoundly Disappointed Support Group (SPOILERS)
I don't get the hate. THIS episode was fantastic. Loved it all. Loved the Audrey ending completely. Can't wait for next week....mostly because someone I know is in the episode. Can you imagine??

This was the first part I didn't check the time.
I don't think this is one of my false 'highs' from the hit of a new part. I really really liked this one.
