Friends from France, We Need Your Expertise - Hap's Diner

There is a thread over at the Gazette, but I wanted to see if anyone here could help as well.

We are trying to figure out once and for all what the French Woman at Hap's is saying when the Old Man at Hap's says "I know shit from Shinola".

I tried the closed captioning on the MK2 French disc figuring that they would be able to capture it but it seems even they didn't capture it right. This is what they claim it is:

n'ennuie pas le monsieur

The first word seems right (at least it sounds right but is it even a word?) but not the rest.

I've been trying to figure that one out for years. I always heard "<something> pas le bon moment" - "<something> not the right time."

Well, I don't think any of us have got it yet!

I'm dropping the "pas" in favour of "et", "est" or "-ez" ("and", "is", or the regular 2nd person-plural imperative ending) - I'm reasonably certain that the last bit is "le bon moment".

The first bit I can't get my head around. Folks on the other thread are hearing "Ennuyez" (to be bored), which I think is very close, but my ear hears an "a" sound at the beginning, but I can't fit words that sound right. I always want it to be "attendez le bon moment" (wait for the right time), which makes sense when the Old Man repeats himself. But the sounds aren't quite right. That's just not it.

On the other hand, my ear is tuned to Canadian French - like our favoutite card dealer at One Eyed Jack's!

"Dans la nuit est le bar"

That's what, personnaly, I hear from this short sentence and that's mean : "This is the night in the bar" (approximativly)

That's sound like bad french

What I hear, pretty clearly, is : "La nuit est le bon moment" (french for "Night time is the right time").

I don't hear the same thing as zachary_mayo, I always hear 'Dans la nuit est le bar'...

On the first viewing I always heard "La nuit est un bon moment" (Night(time) is a good time) so this interpretation probably "conditioned" my hearing each time I saw it again. I'll give it a very detailed listen and will get back to you.

EDIT: after a dozen full-blown volume listens, I'd tend to settle for "La nuit a des bons moments" or "la nuit y'a des bons moments" which roughly translates to "some good times happen at night"

(I also just listened to the French dubbed track, but what the girl says on the dubbed version translates to "do not bother the gentleman")

Hello!
I'm French and I hear something very different (spoken with an awful accent):
"Henry, il est pas marrant" that means "Henry, he's not funny".
So I'm sure that the French girl is not French
Maybe she speaks about the FBI agent.

For me it's :

"Dans la nuit, il est bon"

or "Dans le nuit est le bar"

That's mean :

"In the night this is good" or 'In the night this is the good times"

or "In the night is the bar."

Like wrote it hervé, this woman is not french and speak bad french!

Well, I don't hear the same things ! For me the girl says: "Henry il est bon moment".

I can't really traduce it, because it's a very bad french

...Doesn't Laura say something simular to "Night time is my time", later in the film in the scene with Donna, taking place in the Palmer household, right before she/they leave for the roadhouse.? Could be connected.

To me, she says:
"Ennui les bons moments"
Means (basically)
"Good moments are boring"

Notes:
1. This sentence is not grammatically correct in French
2. The woman is definitely not French (english accent)
