What Did Laura Whisper?
I think Cooper fails to realize that Leland is culpable for his actions on some level. So he'd still be shocked to hear from Laura that "my father killed me."
Re: What Did Laura Whisper?
I'd be genuinely surprised if it ever turns out that Lynch and Frost actually decided what she whispers.

Exactly. It's just a joke/homage/reference to season 1.Kilmoore wrote:I'd be genuinely surprised if it ever turns out that Lynch and Frost actually decided what she whispers.
Even if I'm sure they haven't thought about it, anyway I'll go and say that she whispers 'we live inside a dream'.
Re: What Did Laura Whisper?
Cooper's horrified reaction is very specific and different from his reaction in the first season. It feels like a foreshadowing of the ending for me.
This is - excuse me - a damn fine cup of coffee.

What in the last episode end-titles?
She's whispering the story you've just seen, and has been for 25 years.

"Crack the code, solve the crime."

She is whispering something! Her mouth is party visible for the first part. Some skilled lip readers here?Kilmoore wrote:I'd be genuinely surprised if it ever turns out that Lynch and Frost actually decided what she whispers.
I bet Lynch, Frost, Kyle and Sheryl know.
Carrie Page: "It's a long way... In those days, I was too young to know any better."
Re: What Did Laura Whisper?
Yes, I think it's important to compare this scene with its counterpart from 25 years ago. In the first version, Cooper explains, Laura whispered the name of her killer into his ear -- a name he forgets upon waking. The fact that he forgets the name, and it remains within the dream, is something that I've always seen as pivotal.Panapaok wrote:Cooper's horrified reaction is very specific and different from his reaction in the first season. To be in that situation again (or is it again? past or future?) and to be shown as horrified by what Laura says perhaps tells us something about why he forgets the name. Maybe it isn't so much forgotten as repressed (which amounts to the same) because of what it would imply about him, or the consequences of his actions. It's possible to see the same kind of bootstrap paradox at work here as the one we have in LH; Fred whispering 'Dick Laurent is dead' into the intercom is very much like Laura whispering into Cooper's ear, only we the audience aren't given the content. I don't actually think we need it; it's a floating signifier, and its only importance is that it initiates a series of actions that culminate in returning to the same place again, but on another level. We can speculate that Laura whispers 'well, actually, Dale Cooper, you killed me, and you did so precisely by trying to prevent my death' or something along those lines but it really makes no difference what was actually scripted, and might never, ever, be revealed to us.

As a matter of fact, 'Chalfont' was the name of the people that rented this space before. Two Chalfonts. Weird, huh?
Re: What Did Laura Whisper?
I think it's way more than a joke and homage. It being an unsolvable mystery is the point, and ties into the themes of the last two episodes.powerleftist wrote:Exactly. I can just imagine Lynch and Frost dreaming up that moment: "and then she whispers in his ear, and we don't hear it", and silently letting the brilliance of the idea sink in.
Re: What Did Laura Whisper?
Exactly. I'm trying not to be argumentative or combative, but the cynicism that has infected some interpretations of TPTR on forums like this one is shocking to me. That Laura's utterance is, ultimately, an unsolvable (perhaps because it represents the repression of true and unsolvable horror) mystery is absolutely crucial and has to be seen as intentional. To read it as a joke or a mean-spirited trick played on viewers, is to say that the entire Return (and maybe all of TP) is a just such a joke.Cde. wrote: I think it's way more than a joke and homage. Re: What Did Laura Whisper?
She was whispering "Can you believe we are actually getting paid to do this ? , I bet the fans are going to be debating what I'm saying for another 25 years. Oh by the way I'm making more money that you. "
Huh ?
Huh ?
When Jupiter and Saturn meet , oh what a crop of mummy wheat.

Also curious who says "Whisper" in Part 2. Given the attention to sound design, and the fact that DKL undoubtedly watched the show on high-quality equipment at high volume, there's no way this was unintentional. Is Laura being instructed/manipulated by someone?
