Obsessed with cellphones

Post by Snogster707 »

Argh, I hate it when friends visit with you, but chat frequently on their cells. Most of my friends don't do this, no do I. Personally, I like to be alone when chatting on my phone. When with friends, I want to be engaged with them. Anyway, a friend did this around me last week. I was so surprised as I'd thought she'd be the last person to do this. I feel very rude being on the cell when people are with me. I will use it if I get an important call, but keep it short.as well, my cell usually lives at home; I rarely have it on my person when I'm out &about..

So many people are  grafted to their cells. I'm surprised that they don't develop a webbing of skin on their hands to their cells.

I agree 100%, Snogster707!!! I HATE mobile phones. I also HATE iPods/Pads/Puds etc. These things are erecting walls between people, and announcing "Shut up! This person phoning me is more important than you!"

Grrrrrrrr!!!!

I'm not chatting on phone. But I'm guilty of one thing: I'm checking on my phone this forum - especially Fridays evening when I'm with my friends - they don't like it ;-) But to know what people think of new DL.com releases is like a drug to me.

While I don't appreciate it when I'm with a friend and they always somehow become busy on their cell phones, I still personally use mine in awkward situations. I don't know if anyone else does this, but sometimes I pretend I'm texting if I'm in the middle of a crowd on my college campus just so I don't look awkward standing around.

Smillsoid: you make an excellent point; I couldn't have put it any better.

Silent: well, I understand what you mean: I often feel ackward if I'm idle in certain situations, so having something to 'do' is a good idea. For example, if I eat out Alone, I feel sooo self conscious that I'll bring reading material, so I look engaged. Also, if you don't want some 'loser' pestering you, interActing with something( or person) is a good thing, lol!!!

As for my friend, she has done this only once. Lol, she was answering calls from a fella she was having a little affair with. Her boyfriend was on vacation. When the cat's away, the mice will play!!!

Snogster707 - don't you feel like the technology is creating the need for people to keep buying these things, rather than people needing them, and technology providing products? It's totally backwards, and materialistic. Notice how it taken as read now - especially in advertising - that people are naturally 'addicted' to their iPhone/iPad etc. These things are being sold like drugs to neutralize the population! Shades of "Brave New World".

Smilsoid: again, I agree. When I wait to transfer buses at our city's lovely depot( read: sordid and ghetto), so many people seem to be truly addicted to their cells. There's even a skateboarder on my street who listens to either his iPod or smartphone whilst skateboarding. Now, that's a recipe for disaster.

I also agree with the sheer materialism you speak of. It's galling.

Well, it's up to us few non-addicts to keep our eye on the 'puppet masters', while the clones skateboard into techno-slave oblivion!
