I'm pretty sure in a previous thread a while back, It was asked what your hopes and wishes are for S3. I wished that the soundtrack would contain some re-recorded original tracks along with a mix of brand new score, original Lynch music and some classic gems.

I seem to have got one wish granted. Deluxe vinyl box set of S3 soundtrack and score thankyouplease 8)

So close to the original but yet just nuanced enough to be different. I remember how thrilled I was that they made new music for FWWM, and now we'll be getting Twin Peaks Music v3. Crazy cool.

So close now. Actually seeing that was so surreal. The book will be only a few more weeks then it officially begins again...

The original run heavily replayed certain tracks (or at least, as someone who hasn't read in-depth about the soundtrack, it sounded like repetition) and I wonder if part of that was a time constraint, particularly when you're getting into a 22-episode season? FWWM, as I remembered, felt like it was much more specifically scored in regards to originally pieces for each scene (but, it's been a while since I've watched). I imagine the new series will follow that more filmic style?
For the original run, Badalamenti (and his musicians) had a few recording sessions to create a "library" of music for the music editor and the director of the episodes to choose from. One thing they did to create more music was for some tracks (Audrey's Dance, Dance of the Dream Man, etc.) they recorded each instrument separately to they could create different combinations/mixes later on. You can visit my mixes page for examples of this.

Things were very rarely recorded for what was on the screen. But new compositions were created on request sometimes throughout the show. Some tracks went unused, and some showed up well after they were recorded. (Evelyn and James was a piece recorded during the early sessions of season 1 for instance).

I'm pretty sure Angelo was much more hands on for FWWM in terms of creating tracks specifically for scenes in the movie- and my guess is this will be the case for S3 as well. If I had to guess, I'd say Lynch will likely be contributing some music as well (as he did for FWWM). And there are rumors of many other musicians contributing songs. Where as the original was all badalamenti (save for the couple old standards).

Makes sense, it certainly felt that way. I'm definitely hoping for the other approach (you can only take so much Cool Jazz, y'know?)

I'm really hoping for some great musical numbers as well in the Roadhouse.

I'm a huge huge Sharon Van Etten fan, and was so overjoyed (and frankly surprised) to see her on the list. In fact, I caught a show she did in Toronto a couple weeks back. For what it's worth, I tried asking her about Twin Peaks, but, she ignored the question (it was after the show, while she was signing a couple autographs, and she walked up to hear what I was saying, then did a swift 180 the moment I said Twin Peaks). My face has never been redder from embarrassment (as someone who's very reserved, it took all the courage I mustered to ask that question). I did get a chance to speak to her later on though, since the show was at a bar. She was super lovely, and I mostly embarrassed myself (I think deep down everyone thinks when you meet someone famous that you're gonna say something so profound and become best friends .. instead you mostly just stammer at them). I just assume as she's still a fairly small time performer who's probably NDA'd like crazy that she felt it safer to just not respond to anything Twin Peaks (which is completely fair).

Here's some songs by her, in case anyone is interested;

Angelo said he knew about the revival five (?) years ago, so he was one of the first people Lynch told, and I'm guessing there was a reason for that. He's probably been working on the music all along. Lynch likes to have the score done before he even starts shooting his films typically, right?

I wonder now if Twin Peaks Music Archive happened just because Lynch needed old music library for the new season?

The Archive releases began March or April 2012 - right around the time Lynch and Frost began writing "the first two hours" after having kicked around ideas for about nine months. Can't be certain what prompted Mr. Hurley's going through the archives, but something was happening by then! In the autumn of 2012, Lynch would tell Badalamenti about the pending third season.

I read Scorsese sometimes likes to play music from his films while shooting a scene (e.g. he had Layla playing during the section in Goodfellas where all those bodies are found). Wonder if Lynch does anything like that??

I think Lynch did that when they were shooting the pilot of the original series.

I love Sharon Van Etten and sincerely hope she will be performing music in the new series.

That's got to be one of the most exciting things about S3 - all the musicians on the cast list. I'm also a fan of Sky Ferreira's "Night Time Is My Time" album.

I would bet on some Chrysta Bell being in the new season. They seem to have a great working relationship, and her stuff is pretty awesome.
