It is from NIGHTDREAMS. Rinse Dream aka Stephen Sayadian has come the closest in my opinion to creating the pure nightmare fuel of vintage Lynch. Check out CAFE FLESH or DR. CALGARI (1989) for more.

Interestingly enough, Sayadian was the creative director for the David Lynch Foundation "Psychogenic Fugue" film starring John Malkovich:

Wow, I thought that avatar looked familiar :D

I made presentation about "surrealism in porn" at school 5 or so years ago. I showed a few clips from all of those three movies.

rami airola, if you have time please see my post in the mullholland drive thread about FWWM and twin peaks pilot director of photography, ron garcia's 1971 film, " the toy box". while not as self conciously surreal as the films you and tid mentioned, it's pretty out there and it's influence on mullholland drive is undeniable, and to a certain extent on lost highway as well. it's more 42nd street style exploitation but i am fairly certain garcia must have screened the film for lynch before lynch shot those films and certainly before the writing of mulholland drive.

Very intriguing, Woodsie. I admit to having trouble locating it amidst the major overhaul of the boards. Would you be able to post a link here to the post? Thanks.

I need to see this film! Sounds amazing. Interestingly Stephen Sayadian worked as a production designer on the TV show Silk Stalkings, which Ron Garcia directed a handful of episodes of!

that is a cool coincidence since it also connects actress and stuntwoman laura albert to him. should you see it, you will recognize marsha jordan from many stephen apostoloph films, and russ meyer actress ushi digard in small roles among several other well known low-budget troopers. i think i am getting too off topic though - and i imagine that a fondness for extremely low-budget exploitation films from the 60s/70s is unlikey to be shared by most forum members, however, i would be very interested in hearing, perhaps on it's own thread, if anyone else recognizes certain aspects of mullholland drive/lost highway in "the toy box" as i do. either way, i think everyone will agree that even with the most miniscule budget and in this case working with 16mm/32mm, garcia is certainly a very talented cinematographer who knows how to make the most of whatever he does.

(And "great" is just subjective opinion - Nevins might not actually care for it, and be lying in that sense, but I or you might love it all the same, in which sense he'd be telling the truth.)

But the way Nevins chose to sell it is interesting to me. I suspect the subtext of the much-discussed "pure heroin" and "rewards close watching" comments is "We've got something weirder and more perplexing than we bargained for at first - we need to start prepping the audience and press now for that fact." If the finished season were a lot more accessible and conventional than Lynch's last couple films, I think we would instead have heard something along the lines of "We think this will be very welcoming for new viewers of all stripes, as well as satisfying for longtime fans." But with snazzier phrasing. elephant.

Exactly. The show will very likely be more Lynchian and abstract than Showtime had originally expected. That's my impression at least.

All available information points to S3 being more like FWWM, Lost Highway and Mulholland Drive (or maybe even IE) than like S1 and S2. But maybe that's just wishful thinking on my part. No actually, I really think it seems to be the case.

(I'm a longtime lurker, by the way. Very excited for S3!)

If this estimate is accurate, and it does look plausible to me... isn't it interesting that Nevins may have found himself with a handful of Lynchian surrealism... despite having famously greenlit the project on the basis of the script for the first two hours? Could this story get weirder and weirder as it progresses?

We know how Lynch feels about following scripts to the letter. Besides, the story isn't necessarily that weird, it's the execution that matters.

Yes, I think the excecution maybe turned out to be more abstract than Showtime expected beforehand.

I wouldn't mind at all if the show is more like Mulholland Drive or Lost Highway, but oh man, are some people going to be pissed if it's more Lynchian than expected. Reminds me how people got upset over S2 of True Detective, when it took a more surreal approach. The season was great, but it got lynched and the show died as a result of it.

No- Season 2 of True Detective was a rambling, shambolic mess- NOT " more surreal "- as compared to the well written, taut Horror/ Occult show that Season 1 of TD was- which made it a great show, and more the reason for the disappointment in the follow up.
I'm not sure why people will be disappointed if Season 3 of Twin Peaks is more " Lynchian "- isn't this part of the reason people love the show in the first place? ( as well as Mark Frost's contribution as well of course ).

Fine, that's your opinion. I don't want to discuss that any further on a forum dedicated to TP.

I mostly meant the mainstream audience who love the show for it's quirky humor and lighter toned segments. You do know that majority of people don't like FWWM? That is what I mean. I'm sure that people on this forum, myself included, will love it.
