I'm not convinced by the theory that as the series progresses more of that mood will surface. It's not there in Lost Highway, Mullholland Drive, Inland Empire either, no reason it should be, but it's absence from the Twin Peaks series 3 opening 4 episodes is disappointing.

That the supernatural elements are now no longer ambiguous is a killer for me. BOB still might have just been a metaphor for psychosis or an evil spirit, or both or neither. The Red Room a kind of Jungian psycho- dream-space, not a sci-fi parallel dimension. Now we have garmonbozia being sent to an FBI lab, an gore-fest alien, and people actually coming out of electrical wall sockets. Not implied or mysterious. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy the hokey surrealism, but it's a marked difference from the original and disappointing that they've taken a more concrete approach to showing the mechanics of the occult. I almost feel like I'm being talked down to in this regard, it's too easy to follow!
We'll never see a true return to the original show (it's just not possible, frankly) but given this is a long-form series ABOUT Twin Peaks I think it's safe to say many homely elements will return. Just maybe not to the degree you hope.

I think it's possible for both to exist concurrently.

Thank you so much for this thread... I actually like Season Three so far but it is greatly comforting to find others who dare to see flaws in TP.

Twin Peaks: Season 3 scene done in Seasons 1&2 Style
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ukzvjrY ... e=youtu.be

I just thought I'd try this as an exercise to see if it can be done. I noticed that there is so much silence and lingering shots in this new season of Twin Peaks that it would be fairly easy to edit down one of the long, drawn out season 3 scenes and make it a bit more snappy to make it feel a bit closer to classic Twin Peaks. Adding Angelo Badalamenti's music completes the package.

It's not perfect, but it's just an experiment. Overall I cut the scene down by about 45 seconds.

For the record, I'm not saying this is better than what Lynch did. I was just wondering if I could do it.

Seconded- it's very cool. It really feels to me like bits of this new series are similar to the first one, except the lack of soundtrack totally changes the feel.

I'm not in the camp that thinks that the music is suddenly going to make a return (this seems like wishful thinking to me), but I'd love to know more about why this was done. Maybe it would just be too hard to reconcile the wild changes in tone across scenes if the soundtrack kept suddenly intruding every time the action moved to the town of Twin Peaks (i.e. the lack of music works really well in the New York scenes,so you wouldn't want it there).

Incidentally, my brother loved the new series after watching the first four parts on Friday. He found the first half of episode 3 "stupid", but didn't actively dislike it.

I got this crazy idea but it just might work... how about synching up a muted TP and playing The Wizard of OZ over it?

PS - don't forget to wait until the third lion roar

Ha. I, too, don't get all these fussing about the supposed excellence of part 3's first half. To me, the stuff felt quite a bit like Monthy Python's Flying Circus (Gabriel already made that comparison somewhere and I find it very apt and on-the-nose). Which is perfectly fine, don't get me wrong, it's just that it's a far cry from the supreme ominousness of what we saw, say, in the S 2 finale. By contrast, this here feels like some outrageously kooky and sardonically black comedy, externally symbolized with off-the-wall special effects. Not TP as I know it, anyhow. Well, knew it. :?

Am abroad at the moment and unable to watch the new episode for a few days.

Can't wait to hear whether Episode 5 has won over any of us naysayers or lost any of you yaysayers.

I think the most you can attribute to the 'enthusiasts' is some of them felt it was not quite as good as the first four.

Personally I thought it was the best yet, but that's me! I'll see myself out.

True, although it reminded strongly me of some of Walerian Borowczyk's animated work, which in turn heavily influenced Terry Gilliam...

Yep! I felt this was a critical episode and it was way ahead of anything yet seen. I think there's been a lot wrong so far, but this part worked for me.

Does anyone feel that the complexity quotient and ambition in scope of the new series is so high as to be dilutive? The level of complexity in the original Series and FWWM was absolutely right for me, high enough to be beguiling and keep me thinking about the significance of the ring, the Lodge characters, etc but with still enough clarity and focus for the universe to feel coherent.

It feels like there are so many things going on now that Twin Peaks is now more puzzle than mystery.

Edit: I will admit to watching the DougieCoop 'Haloooooooooo' casino compilation on YouTube and finding it both hilarious and captivating. There's probably a lot to fascinate and admire in all of this but I can't connect with it in any meaningful way.
