@counterpaul
timeline fudges.
yeah i am ok with them, i was just briefly interested in the ABC once they started throwing all these specific numbered dates at us in ep.9/
before dates were flagged up so hard, it hadn't occurred to me to think about it.

Re: Season 3 Timeline (SPOILERS)

Post by counterpaul »

Okay, Part 10 had, by far, the wonkiest timeline of any of the Parts. It jumped between day and night several times but I'm fairly sure that all but one scene was a continuation of Day 9 (the same day/evening we saw begin in Part 9). We've seen a very small handful of scenes that fudged the otherwise quite linear timeline, but Part 10 played unusually fast and loose.

As to why Lynch chose this approach, I think it has to do with grouping things happening around the same time (i.e. there are no huge leaps--at most, we cover parts of two different days here) into thematic clusters, where a strictly chronological order would have led to scenes clashing against one another rather than serving complimentary roles.

Anyway, assuming that the Timeline above is generally correct and COOPER's meeting with Hutch and Chantal happened early in the morning of Day 9, I would say that Part 10 works roughly this way:

PART 10:
DAY 9 (cont)
Richard kills Miriam/calls Chad
Carl/Becky/Stephen at New Fat Trout
Mitchum Brothers/Candie fly/remote control scene
Janey-E takes Coop to see Dr. Ben
Jerry in the woods looks for cell reception (They can't fool him; he's been here before!)
Chad intercepts the mail/Lucy knows he's up to something
Richard attacks/robs Sylvia/Johnny's unable to intervene
Mitchum Brothers see Coop on the news
Janey-E/Coop have sex
Jacoby does his show/Nadine watches from Run Silent, Run Drapes
Duncan Todd sends Tony to the Mitchum Brothers
Albert/Constance on a date/Gordan/Tammy think it's awesome
Tony visits the Mitchum Brothers/isn't super convincing
Mitchum Brothers, back home, decide to "meet" with Coop
Gordon draws/has vision/meets with Albert RE Diane & Tammy RE COOPER at the glass box
Sylvia calls Ben about Richard incident
Margaret Calls Hawk

DAY 10
Morning at the Jones house/Janey-E tells Coop she loves him

Now, it's possible that all of the Twin Peaks material happens on Day 10. If Johnny's injury was sustained on Day 9, he would have had to have gotten medical attention at some point. Lucy's sweater is also different than it was when we last saw her eating lunch. The Twin Peaks timeline between Part 9 and Part 10 is definitely unclear--which is interesting considering that Part 9 was also the first time we got a definitive date. I don't really mind ignoring Lucy's sweater, and maybe (with all the fudging going on) Johnny was actually injured on Day 8 (or, hell, earlier?) and we just saw it in Part 9, so I think maybe the mail comes after lunch on Day 9--I don't think Lucy would wait to tell Frank about her suspicions about Chad just because she was eating lunch. Anyway, we should be able to piece it all together once Bobby, Hawk, and Frank head off to Jackrabbit's Palace. We can back-date from there as needed.

The Coop/Janey-E timeline remains quite clear taken on its own. The doctor's visit and sex scene have to be the same day they were at the Vegas police station and Bushnell gave Coop the rest of the day off. The "morning after" scene is the only scene that has to be Day 10.

The fact that the Duncan Todd/Mitchum Brothers scenes were cut at least slightly out of order is interesting, and a little confusing, but there are solid clues. The news report mentions that the attack on Coop happened "just yesterday" so that news report has to be on Day 9. Now, it's possible that Duncan sent Anthony to see the Mitchum Brothers on the night of Day 10, but I doubt he'd wait after that call from COOPER. I think all the Duncan/Tony/Mitchum Brothers business is happening on Day 9 (well, Tony meets them at midnight, so technically these scenes bleed into the wee hours of Day 10).

All the Buckhorn material with Gordon, Albert, Tammy, and Constance has to happen on Day 9 because Albert mentions that Diane's text was received at "11:13 this morning." Case closed.

So, some definite weirdness in this one, but no big jumps. The most non-linear moment is the "morning after" scene with Janey-E and Coop--which preceeds several scenes that must take place the previous day/evening. We could just as easily have been on Day 9 or Day 10 in Twin Peaks (unless the theory that the whole hit-and-run storyline takes place later than everything else--which this Part neither refutes nor supports--ends up being accurate), but Vegas and Buckhorn pretty much have to be as listed above.

I also lean towards the Twin Peaks scenes being on Day 9, mostly because otherwise it would mean Richard spent more than a day just relaxing prior to getting to work on covering up his hit-and-run.

Agreed. That's the main reason I'd place it all on Day 9 (even though it calls into question which day Johnny may have initially been injured). Unless it is true that the whole hit-and-run story is, for some reason, taking place later than everything else, Day 9 makes the most sense because it definitely seems like the hit-and-run just happened the previous day--Miriam wouldn't wait to send that letter and Richard wouldn't wait to go after her.

Small correction: The woman Albert is on a date with is named Constance.

Also, rewatching and thinking this one over, I think there might be a couple more scenes that take place on Day 10.

It occurred to me that Miriam's letter would be quite unlikely to arrive in the mail the same day she sent it (she tells Richard that she sent it that same day he showed up at her place). So, I started wondering if maybe the scene with Chad intercepting the mail might be the day after Richard attacked Miriam, and it would make sense given Lucy's different sweater.

In fact, it seems like maybe the scene from Part 9 with Lucy and Andy chair shopping and the scene with Chad intercepting the mail might very well have happened on the same day, based on Lucy's sweater (which is the same in those two scenes, but different when Frank, Hawk, and Bobby come in and then go back outside as Lucy eats her lunch in Part 9).

Plus, as I mentioned above, there's the whole issue of Johnny getting medical attention since his incident in Part 9. It stands to reason that the scene in which Richard barges in and robs Sylvia takes place the following day.

So:

DAY 10
09.10 Andy and Lucy argue about what color chair to buy.
10.10 Janey-E shows appreciation to Dougie-E about "last night".
10.12 Chad intercepts mail from Lucy.
10.13 Richard receives text from Chad that he got letter.
10.14 Johnny listens to talking bear, Richard attacks and robs Sylvia (grandmother).

Maybe???

Obviously this is all ambiguous, so I'd imagine you'd leave the timeline as it is.

Usually, I don't worry about these minor continuity fudges at all (they're really no big deal, and as soon as you start looking closely for them, you'll likely find them in just about every movie ever made because there are good reasons to juggle scenes around a bit in editing--reasons more important than super minor continuity gaffes), but now I do find myself wondering if the whole hit-and-run story might be on a different timeline. I'm still far from convinced, but I'm more open to the idea than I was before Part 10--which is the first time in the series that time was shifted around so freely.

I'm still fairly sure that these decisions were made because these scenes simply played better in this order, but, still, it's interesting.

Thanks for the correction and the input. This was the first episode that was really squirrelly. Hopefully, Part 11 clears some things up.

I know we're all having our doubts that date-specific props/etc. are going to track once all is said and done. But in the interest of recording everything: the weather report the MItchums watch appears to take place on a Weds. night (the weather report starts with Thurs.), which of course would be inconsistent with 9/29/14 (a Monday).

Yes, it seems that this scene happens Wednesday 29th September. Well, funny thing if you look the calendars: in 2014, 29/9 was a monday. In 2015 29/9 was a tuesday. In 2016, it should have been a wednesday. But it was a leap year. So it never happened! Maybe TP S3 happens in a parallel world where 2016 was not a leap year.

Last Wednesday 29th September was in 2010.

Unless the US has suddenly got a same day postal mail service, then Chad MUST be on day 10, as Miriam clearly states just before Richard attacks her that she posted the letter that day.

COOPER was arrested the Monday after that (9/26).

COOPER was let out of jail a couple of days later (1am Wednesday night/Thursday morning, 9/28 or technically early on 9/29).
So, if Mr. C was arrested 9/26, the earliest the first flight (Gordon, Albert, Tammy) could have made would have been on 9/27. Did they then fly back that night, Albert find Diane in the bar, they went next morning to Diane's apartment, flew that same day back to have the second interview with Mr. C? They would have had to if Coop was then released during the night of 9/28. This all doesn't seem to fit. Am I missing something?

I'm inclined to think that the sweater is Day 10 too. But that's mainly because I am really hoping we see Oct 1st next ep, and most indications seem to be that's Day 11.

They have a private jet, so yes I think they've done that nuch flying.

That's right. There's basically no other way to read that plotline.

It wasn't the jet part. It was the rapid sequence of events with Diane. I just don't think that is realistic (but, you never know).

It's been awhile since I've been on this forum but I was just directed to this post via Reddit after spending a few hours working up my own document of the timeline. I don't understand the formatting of the list in this thread, I'll have to keep looking at it.

Here's what I've come up with. The light red squares are stuff I'm unsure of that may occur earlier or later. The dark red square is the only outright conflict I can find so far.
