Listen to the sounds....

Post by claaa7 »

This is obviously a huge clue, and The FIrmena plays the sounds in question for Agent Cooper several times to make sure he knows it is what he is hearing. Of course we know that the sound is connected to Laura as it's the sound we hear when she is snatche away violently from The Log. But watching "The Missing Pieces" i think i might hve figured out what it actually is and it's not some throwaway sound like the casino slot machine that was a popular theory. It's the sound of Laura getting the key from under her lamp (which she also lits with the 'Meanhile' gesture). i can't find the scene with sound on YouTube, but this is the scene I'm talking about:

https://giphy.com/gifs/xUOwG6V0jWu4Dxvruo

of course this has some major implications given how imporant Laura's diary was in the original and new series. Hawk's line that they found 3 pages but they are still one missing is hardly a throwaway line. not even the worst hack would write that and then don't follow up on it (as in Carrie Page).

There's a thread about this here, with additional audio samples, posted about five months ago:
https://www.reddit.com/r/twinpeaks/comm ... eard_over/

I don't know if it's true, but the sounds being so similar, coupled with the meaningfulness of Laura unlocking her diary makes it the most compelling theory I've heard on the matter.

I think it's supposed to be the sound of a geiger counter.

I was just watching a livestream of someone playing Fallout 3 where a geiger counter made its sounds and I immediately had tons of flashbacks of Twin Peaks Season 3.

I thought it makes so much sense but when I googled it it seems some people here and there mention it - it's even mentioned a couple of times in this forum - but there seems to be almost zero discussion about that theory.

Atomic bomb releases radioactivity. You can measure the amount of radioactivity with a geiger counter and while the sound isn't exactly the same it is - I think - too similar for it to be just a coincidence.
I think radioactivity might be quite like electricity in Twin Peaks. Just as electricity isn't just electricity but something much more, radioactivity isn't just radioactivity either. Maybe Judy and her forces are close if you can sense radioactivity. The sound is there when Laura vanishes in the forest (maybe Judy is close). The sound is there when Cooper and Carrie are in front of the Palmer house, just before the lights go off.

Maybe Lynch and Frost wanted to bring another thing with electricity to point out whenever there might be something supernatural about to happen. Electricity seems to have a connection with the Lodge people, but perhaps using electricity to be connected to Judy didn't feel right and they thought to use a completely new thing to address Judy's presence or influence.

While Lynch might've used the diary sound to make this "listen to the sounds" noise, I don't think it matters what original sound Lynch used to create it.

The sounds sound like radioactivity is talking to you. It doesn't sound like a something that would actually come from a geiger counter as the rhythm is different and there are other different aspects to it too, but it sounds like radioactivity that is alive.

Ummm...so, while watching on headphones today I swear you could hear the sound, or a variation of it, in Part 15 when Log Lady tells Hawk about how death is not the end but rather just a change; the sound occurs after she says this as it cuts back to Hawk. It almost sounds like a chair creaking, but I kept rewinding it and it sounds like the sound.

I think the sound IS of a record skipping*. A record is almost always a linear progression from the start to the end. However, if there is a defect, the needle may skip back and endlessly try to play through. It also may jump forward into another groove. There could also be just a noise heard. So if we look at a record as time, then things start to fall into place. I believe every time we hear this sound in the series, someone enters or is near a new timeline.

It makes sense for The Fireman to have this record player as he is altering timelines throughout the show.

* Although, since we hear no music, is the record in the run out groove? Is the fireman ready to flip the record over and send Coop "far away" yet again armed with new clues?

Record player is seen. Thats where the sounds are coming from. So it makes sense that it just may be a skipping record.
In Episode 8, when we cut into the great cinemopolis and Senorita Dido, the Slow 30s music is playing. Notably this track skips and repeats quite obviously. Does it intend the same conditions of time line circulation?
Does it?

I’ll just quickly link to my post from a few days ago, speculating that the skipping record represents time being stuck between the two timelines (“I am dead, yet I live”), unable to move forward until something happens...

This makes a lot of sense. The only thing that speaks against this theory is that the sound doesn't sound anything like what a skipping record player actually sounds like. It however makes a scene like the one where Sarah Palmer is watching the looping Boxing match fit into the narrative.

The record theory ties in (at least as leitmotif) with the Leland & Maddy death scene, that when Jeffries sends cooper back, he flips the 8 around and changes track much like a record, and there's also that the Woodsman swipes a needle off a record to begin his broadcast.
Recipe not my own. In a coffee cup. 3 TBS flour, 2 TBS sugar, 1.5 TBS cocoa powder, .25 TSP baking powder, pinch of salt. 3 TBS milk, 1.5 TBS vegetable oil, 1 TBS peanut butter. Add and mix each set. Microwave 1 minute 10 seconds. The cup will be hot.

Good observations. And of course, the skipping-needle scene in E14 features the white horse, who is linked to the Woodsmen in P8. As I’ve mentioned, the “gatekeeper” Woodsman’s machine in P15 contains a record player (a new addition which wasn’t in Jürgen Prochnow’s version of the same machine in FWWM). Some fascinating connections, and I defy anyone to claim this stuff wasn’t very consciously thought out by L/F, even if they might not be able to articulate exactly what it all means.

Yes! I remember it being so fascinating when someone pointed that out to me, but it's so hidden that I didn't make the connection when thinking of all the vinyl appearances.

You could easily say that it's a mutual fascination between Lynch & Frost. There's Jacoby (or was it Jerry?) who had the sheds converted into speakers and the huge vinyl collection in TFD, and keeping in mind that Frost wrote E14, with the Leland & Maddy vinyl-skipping scene. Then you have Lynch, who had it in Eraserhead & very prominently in Inland Empire, and some others I'm sure ... plus his own music and soundtracks are widely on vinyl.

However, you have me seeing that it's always connected with Lodge entities. One could easily take the elemental/environmentalist approach and point out that vinyl is made from a plastic, and that perhaps it's rather closer to wood (haunted with music than with spirits) than electricity, or somewhere in between? It would fit in nicely with the corrupted nature motifs, like the creamed corn, the oil-coated woodsmen, that past the lodge opening in the forest, is furniture, among others. And also, it seemed so in Inland Empire that a record can contain a world ... plus we know how transportational Lynch finds music to be.

IIRC, the record-skipping in E14 is not in the script (at least, not the version available online), and was likely Lynch’s innovation.

IE is especially interesting because technically AXX°N N. is a radio show. So it’s not clear why a vinyl record is the chosen physical representation. I guess radio plays have been occasionally collected on record (Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy being one example), but I don’t think it’s common by any means. It seems like Lynch just really wanted to use that visual.

Hmm, there's definitely something that looks a whole lot like the record player in Fire Walk With Me - the "shelf" in the middle has the same raised part in its lower right corner and a groove running across the front face.

Good point, you're right, I just skimmed through ...

Yeah, I've always had it in my head that it was a recording of the play, released for home use. It wasn't until P8 that I knew vinyls were (apparently) used for radio broadcasts though, so perhaps it's the same thing, and it's the vinyl in the radio station. But yeah, it's also just a better visual, and the way the light shines on the grooves is interesting.

Good point, that it might be the radio station vinyl in IE. That never occurred to me. I tend to envision old-time radio plays being done live, but I believe many were in fact pre-recorded, particularly the ones with more elaborate production values (like The Adventures of Superman).
