Not sure if this fits best here or in the David Lynch subsection but thought it was interesting enough to post.

Not random at all. Trier's "The Kingdom" was born as a potential storyline for the original "Twin Peaks". After it instead became a series in its own right it too was cut short by collapsing boom and bust ratings - and later a planned conclusion was delayed because of the death of several key cast members.

Now Trier is finally making the last batch of episodes to reach the originally planned 13 installments. In the interview linked to he describes the difficulty he faces in shaping the narrative for a 30 years later Kingdom season, in a way that feels fresh - because Lynch and Frost already did return to their creation many years later. Coming up with lots of new tricks and satirising, pushing and blowing up how the TV series format had evolved in the decades that had passed since the original show. Basically to have his show still be a relevant part of that conversation Trier has to work harder than he would have liked to.

The Kingdom is a work of genius, simply one of the most brilliant pieces of television ever! I have high expectations of this unbelievable continuation almost 25 years later - I hope it's everything TP Season 3 wasn't for me. My only gripe is that Ernst-Hugo Jaregard is, sadly, no longer around - I just can't imagine The Kingdom withough dr. Stig Helmer! (Then again, we've had TP without agent Cooper in it recently, so antyhing's possible.)

Great find, and great thread.

I think Lars is underselling the thought behind it and completeness of it, aka Frost's involvement in the narrative, but I of course see what he's saying, and hope he finishes the last two parts and opens up to it as being complete on an emotional level.

I too can't wait to see what he's up to with The Kingdom!

And, yes, Lars von Trier is a master, no doubt about that.

By the way, there is a separate - and recent - thread in Hap's diner about Riget (The Kingdom) and its upcoming third season.

Great interview. I enjoyed it a lot and didn't know of it's existence until now.
So thanks for posting!
Riget is a work of art indeed, as are much of his other endeavours.
